Created by Jon Harmon Feldman (whose previous credits included such worthwhile weeklies as American Dreams), the semi-serious Big Shots was pigeonholed in the trade press as a "Sex and the City for guys." The series traced the activities of four upscale male friends who regularly commiserated over their lives and careers at a posh country club. The designated "moral center" of the series was James Walker (Michael Vartan), who'd become CEO of Amerimart Industries by a fluke (his boss had been killed in a freak accident just before James was to have been fired), but who was determined to be a standard bearer of integrity both in and out of the workplace -- and to tactfully ignore the fact that his wife, Stacey (Wendy Moniz), had been having an affair with his former employer. James' best buds included Brody Johns (Christopher Titus), senior vice president of Alpha Crisis Management, who had trouble "managing" his contentious spouse, Janelle (Charisma Carpenter); Karl Mixworthy (Joshua Malina), chief exec of a huge pharmaceutical conglomerate, tolerably married to Wendy (Amy Sloan) while having an affair with hyper-possessive Marla (Jessica Collins); and Duncan Collinsworth (Dylan McDermott), top man at Reveal Cosmetics, who though long divorced somehow found it difficult to resist the sexual charms of his ex-wife, Lisbeth (Paige Turco), and whose future was jeopardized by an unfortunate one-night stand with a hooker named Dontrelle (Jazzmun), who turned out to be a transsexual. Nor did Duncan's emotional entanglements end there; he also had a lot of trouble relating to his estranged 19-year-old daughter, Cameron (Peyton List), and seemed oblivious to the fact that he was worshipped by his attractive business associate Katie Graham (Nia Long). Also in the cast was Francesca P. Roberts as therapist Dr. Seaver-Filner, who was kept solvent by the repeated visits from the Walkers and the Collinsworths. Oscar-winner Sally Field and popular Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart made their highly touted joint return to series television in this hour-long serialized drama set in California. Field was cast as Nora Walker, matriarch of a prosperous and sizeable family and mistress of an impressive estate. Nora's comfortable, well-ordered lifestyle was shattered upon the death of her husband, William (played in the opener by Tom Skerritt), whereupon things also unraveled for Nora's grown children, with dark secrets and unhappy relationships coming to the forefront in rapid and disturbing fashion. Flockhart was seen as Nora's daughter Kitty, a New York-based conservative talk-show host who was in town at the time of her father's death to consider a job as a political commentator on a national TV show. Rachel Griffiths played Kitty's sister Sarah, who had remained in California to help run the family business with her brother Thomas (Balthazar Getty) and Thomas' wife, Julia (Sarah Jane Morris). Other members of the Walker brood included Justin (David Annable), a disturbed veteran of the Afghan war, and Kevin (Matthew Rhys), a gay lawyer, as well as Sarah's stay-at-home-dad husband, Joe (John Pyper-Ferguson), and their children and Saul Holden (Ron Rifkin), family uncle and brother to Nora. Looming ominously over the proceedings was a "mystery woman" (later identified as Holly Harper), who had some sort of connection with the late William Walker, and who was portrayed by Patricia Wettig, real-life wife of series co-producer/co-creator Ken Olin. This episode introduces Michelle Forbes in the role of new chief medical examiner Julianna Cox. Descending upon a murder scene being investigated by Lewis (Clark Johnson) and Bayliss (Kyle Secor), the outspoken Cox makes no secret of her contempt for the detectives' methods of investigation. Meanwhile, the FBI probe of possible corruption in the arson unit so unnerves Kellerman (Reed Diamond) -- one of the Feds' chief targets -- that he begins lashing out at everyone close to him. And on the domestic front, Brodie (Max Perlich) throws a party for Lewis and his wife, which turns out to be a disaster. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Lots of guys used to dream about having a date with Marilyn Monroe, but three friends who are about to graduate from high school to go their separate ways try to make that fantasy a reality in this comedy, set in 1962. Roy (Jason Priestley), Ned (Gabriel Olds), and Scott (Jerry O'Connell) have been buddies since the age of six, when they were entered together in a Howdy Doody look-alike contest. With only a few weeks to go before they graduate from high school, Roy has impulsively joined the Army to get away from his abusive father, while Ned has discovered he's going to be a father, and Scott is still plagued by his pesky virginity. Wanting to enjoy their last few weeks of freedom, Roy "borrows" a wad of cash and a blue Galaxie 500 convertible from his former employers, repo men Arturo and Antonio Gallo (Kurt Fuller and Stephen Tobolowsky), and persuades his friends to join him as he heads to Hollywood. Roy wants to meet the woman of his dreams, Marilyn Monroe, whom he's learned is working on a new picture, Something's Got to Give. With the help of Roy's Uncle Harry (Joe Pantoliano), they locate Monroe's home and camp out at her gate, hoping to get a glimpse of the glamourous goddess. However, Roy breaks out a reefer to smoke while they attempt to stay up all night (tactical error number one: marijuana does not make you more alert!), and when she slips out without their noticing, the three end up on a mad chase to find Marilyn before she gets away. Meanwhile, the Gallo Brothers have noticed their car is gone, and they are determined to get it back, without much concern for the health or safety of the thief.
