In the conclusion of a three-part story arc, public anger over the shooting that left three homicide detectives seriously wounded and the killer at large results in an ultimatum: Either Homicide solves the case within 48 hours, or it will be turned over to another department. Making matters worse, the cops may have the wrong man in custody when they catch up with the suspect, and the recovery of wounded detective Stan Bolander (Ned Beatty) is progressing painfully slowly. On a more positive note, Russert (Isabella Hoffman) and Howard (Melissa Leo) finally agree to settle their differences and work in harmony -- or at least try to do so. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Six years ago, Hunter (Fred Dryer) was one of four police officers involved in a drug bust in which most of the dealers were killed and $6 million was recovered. At the time, the surviving dealer insisted that there was actually $10 million involved--and that one of the four cops absconded with the rest of the money. Though Hunter managed to avoid suspicion, the lives of the other three officers were ruined, and one died before his time. Now, Hunter's former partner has been murdered--and in a last desperate effort to clear the dead man's name, Hunter must track down the elusive "fourth man." McCall (Stepfanie Kramer) receives a tip from an old friend that rock star Zack Sherman (Nick Sherman), the ex-husband of singer Miss Gina B (Chaka Khan), has disappeared. When her friend vanishes as well, McCall investigates by going undercover as (what else?) a singer at a rock cub called "The Cradle." In an episode clearly inspired by the "Hurricane" Carter saga, ex-prizefighter Typhoon Thompson (Isaac Hayes) gets out of prison after serving several years for the murder of his manager. Now all Typhoon lives for is to get even with the person whom he claims is the real murderer--and to exact vengeance against Hunter (Fred Dryer), the police detective who sent him up. A terrorist group takes credit for the murder of a middle Eastern ambassador. Though Hunter (Fred Dryer) acknowledges that the group is smart enough to take another diplomat hostage (which they have), he isn't convinced that they have the technical savvy to assemble the time bomb that killed the ambassador. After rape victim Rhonda Burke (Sonia Curtis) suffers a fatal attack, one of the many suspects comes forth with a confession--which is promptly thrown out of court. Outraged by this breach of justice, Rhonda's sister Sheila (Lauren Tewes) swears vengeance on all those suspected of assaulting Rhonda. Subsequently, two suspects are killed, and Hunter (Fred Dryer) and McCall (Stepfanie Kramer) are ordered to go after Sheila--even though Hunter cannot reconcile himself to the notion that Sheila is a murderer. Stuart Margolin guest-stars "Hot" Rod Crysler, an old Naval Academy buddy of Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck). A hard-luck case if there ever was one, Crysler has only recently been released from prison, and is scratching out an existence as a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman. Unfortunately, corrupt narcotics officer Emmet Donner (Roland Hunter) is blackmailing Crysler into using his bookselling job as a front for drug-smuggling. Magnum (Tom Selleck) embarks upon a personal vendetta against the unknown culprit who nearly killed Higgins (John Hillerman) by tampering with the brakes of his car. It turns out that this murder attempt is linked with Higgins' current efforts to research an incident which occurred in 1942 at an Honolulu internment camp for Japanese-Americans. Cindy Lewellyn (Anne Bloom) hires Magnum (Tom Selleck) to locate her father Floyd (Noah Beery Jr., who has been missing for ten years, but who has suddenly begun trying to reconnect with her. It turns out that Floyd is a small-time crook who insists he has a lot of good reasons for remaining out of circulation. In the latest in a long line of outlandish get-rich-quick schemes, Angel (Stuart Margolin) poses as a hit man named "Mr. Jones" and accepts a $10,000 contract. Of course, Angel has no intention of killing anyone, and every intention of absconding with the money. But things quickly go sour when Angel's would-be victim is apparently murdered by someone else. Once again forced to extricate Angel from the mess he's gotten himself into, Jim (James Garner) discovers that both the US Navy and the Russian KGB have taken a special interest in the murder--and while he's trying to figure out why, Jim must also solve the mystery of his dad's stolen blue jeans. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Left without a car or a bankroll in Las Vegas, Jim accepts a ride back to LA with a casual acquaitance named Perankus (Sully Boyar). It turns out that Jim's "friend" is not only driving a stolen car, but he is transporting illegal weapons. Hauled into jail when the Feds show up, Jim is outraged that Petrankus is let off scot-free. To find out what is going on, our hero turns to an imperious senior secretary named Mrs. Bateman (Marge Redmond), who in turn is searching for one of her employees (Antoine Becker)--the same girl who took down Jim's statement when he was being grilled by the Feds.
