An ordinary guy decides its time to become a thief in this dark comedy from Germany. Frederik (Fabian Hinrichs) is a nebbishy loan officer at a bank who has been drowning himself in his work ever since he was dumped by his girlfriend Nadine (Nora von Waldstaetten) several years before. Frederik's dedication to his job takes a serious hit when he tells a client he's been declined for a loan, and the client responds by pulling out a pistol and blowing his own brains out. Frederik begins questioning the value of the conventional life he's led, and when he meets and old school friend, Vince (Juergen Vogel), and learns he's been pursuing an on-and-off career in breaking and entering, Frederik begs for a crash course in larceny. As Frederik strives to become mad, bad and dangerous, his skills as a criminal don't keep pace with his ambitions even as he tries to impress Nadine with his new life as an outlaw. Schwerkraft (aka Gravity) was an official selection at the 2010 Seattle Film Festival, where the jury cited director Maximilian Erlenwein with a special mention in the New Directors Competition. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Plenty of teenagers have to deal with bad skin, but one guy is cursed with something worse than acne in this independent coming of age drama. Guido (Jacob Matschenz) is a teenage boy growing up in Germany's Neander Valley, which is famous as the place where the first evidence of the Neanderthal Man was discovered. Guido wants nothing more than to be an ordinary kid who doesn't stand out, but he suffers from a severe case of neurodermatitis, and his irritated skin makes him painfully visible in a crowd. Outcast Guido falls in with a pack of party animals and starts drinking heavily, but when his skin responds badly to his beer swilling, Guido is forced to become a straight arrow. Tired of his schoolmates, Guido begins hanging out with his older brother Martin (Tim Egloff), a slacker who lives with his delinquent pal Rudi (Andreas Schmidt), and Guido makes Rudi his new role model when he learns his father (Falk Rockstroh) has been having an affair with the woman next door. Guido's skin miraculously clears up and he finally is able to win a girlfriend, Katrin (Luana Bellinghausen), but while his love life has improved, he still doesn't know what to do about his troubled relationship with his folks, or their failing relationship with one another. Neanderthal was screened in competition at the 2007 Turin Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A fantasy-prone fourteen year old girl finds her family life becoming fractured after her mother's former lover and his new family moves in next door in director Ulrike von Ribbek's study of a young girl's turbulent transition into adulthood. Nora is an introverted romantic who lives with her parents in a Berlin suburb. Her mother Anette has recently resumed her studies, and her father Uwe is struggling to keep his business afloat. When Anette's one-time lover Thomas and his family move into the house next door, young Nora begins to view him as everything that her father is not, and gradually starts to fall for him. A failed actor and mountaineer who has finally settled down with family, Thomas is handsome, charming, and worldly. Before long, Uwe is beginning to feel as if his entire life revolves around his former nemesis Thomas. Later, as Anette enters into an affair with a fellow student and Uwe's business venture begins to crumble, Nora sees the developments as an opportunity to give in to her desires for Thomas. Later, after Thomas and Uwe clash at a dinner party, the smitten adolescent begins to recognize the virtue in keeping reality and fantasy separate. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Filmmaker Marc Rothemund utilizes long-buried historical records to reconstruct the last six days in the life of renowned German anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl (Julia Jentsch) in an Academy Award-nominated feature that earned star Julia Jentsch a Best Actress award at both the 2005 Lolas and the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival. The year is 1943 and Adolf Hitler's devastating march across Europe has resulted in the formation of the White Rose, an underground resistance movement born in Munich and dedicated to the fall of the Third Reich. Despite being one of the only female members in the White Rose movement, Sophie Scholl's conviction is strong and her will unbreakable. Eventually arrested by the Gestapo for distributing pamphlets on campus alongside her brother Hans, Sophie boldly maintains her ground by calling for freedom and personal responsibility and never once backing down even in the face of certain, inescapable death. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Georgian filmmaker Dmitriy Tsintsadze directs the psychological drama Gun-shy, based on a novel by Dirk Kurbjuweit. Rather than serve in the military, sensitive young Lukas (Fabian Hinrichs) opts to do community service in order to fulfill his government requirement. His duties involve delivering food to old people like the former prostitute Sieveking (Ingeborg Westphal) and the war veteran Beckmann (Rudolph W. Marnitz). One day on the bus, a strange young woman (Lavinia Wilson) slips him a note that reads "Help Me." He follows her, learns her name is Isabella, and discovers she's involved in an abusive relationship with her stepfather, Romberg (Johan Leysen). After Lukas finds out that Romberg is also a big-time motivational speaker, he's moved to do something about the situation. Director Tsintsadze also contributes to the original musical score. Gun-shy was shown at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
