Her boyfriend slain while sleeping as Alberto Fujimori's "civil dictatorship" falters on its last legs, a privileged schoolteacher and a world-weary tabloid journalist attempt to avenge the politically motivated murder in director Francisco José Lombardi's searing political thriller. Guido Pazos (Dario Abad) was an honest judge, so when Gabriela (Melania Urbina) learns that reporter Angelina (Magdyel Ugaz) has buckled to demands that she spin the death as the result of a gay romance gone wrong the grieving girlfriend confronts the cynical writer. Now, as Gabriela and Angelina delve ever deeper into the mystery, Gabriela hatches a detailed plan to murder shadowy criminal Montesinos - the man she holds directly responsible for Guido's death. After acquiring some particularly sensitive false documents and entering into a torrid romance with the one person who could grant her a private audience with the powerful Montesinos, the vengeful Gabriela begins working at a hotel catering exclusively to military and government officials while biding her time and waiting to make the big kill. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Directed by Francisco J. Lombardi, Ojo que no ven (What the Eye Doesn't See) follows several fictional story lines set against a backdrop of the real-life collapse of Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori's regime. There's Colonel Revoredo (Gianfranco Brero), who knows he'll be lucky to escape the country with his life, let alone military status; lawyer Penaflor del Aguila (Gustavo Bueno), whose knack for bribing corrupt officials is now useless; and Mercedes (Melania Urbina), a teenage girl desperately trying to settle the legal and medical situations of her older family members, to name a few. Meanwhile, Helena (Patricia Pereyra), a forensic anthropologist, is raped inside of a mass gravesite, while her husband, unbeknownst to her, is assassinated. Less serious affairs reside inside of a hospital, where two elderly patients quarrel over the current state of affairs, and within a television station, where an overworked makeup artist gets a rude awakening of sorts. Though the characters' situations are vastly different, a common thread -- the fall of the government as they knew it -- unites them, and leads to a consequence none were prepared for. The film also features Paul Vega, Tatiana Astengo, Martin Chauca, Don Lucho, Rodolfo Lopez, and Jorge Rodriguez Paz. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

A seemingly idyllic childhood is shattered in a nation torn apart by civil war in this powerful drama from Peru. Juan was an 11-year-old boy living in a small rural community when the town's corrupt mayor was killed. Local authorities believe that the murderers are part of the "Sendero Lumino" (meaning "Shining Path"), an underground revolutionary army dedicated to bringing down the government, and Juan's father, Fermin (Aristoteles Picho), is arrested for suspected involvement with the group. As Juan tries to adjust to life without his father, he's abducted by Wilmer (Sergio Galliani), a Sendero Lumino organizer who is grooming children of the movement into a guerilla army, though Juan has no inherent desire to fight. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
