The only hope for their rescue lies in the Doctor's precarious relationship with the Emperor Nero (Derek Francis). Britain's long-running (some would say interminable) series of "Carry On" comedies managed to satirize virtually every film genre ever conceived over three decades. Since espionage dramas were hot in 1964, it was inevitable that the unwary world would be treated to Carry on Spying. The "maguffin" in this yarn is the top-secret Formula X, which has been pilfered by that insidious organization S.T.E.N.C.H. (Society for Total Extinction of Non-Existent Humans). Enter the heroes, the men and women of British Operational Security--better known as B.O.S.H. The good guys are understaffed, thus novice agent Kenneth Williams is put in charge of smashing the evil machinations of Dr. Crow (Judith Furse) and The Fat Man (Eric Pohlmann). This microcosmic comedy/drama is set in the kitchen of a swank London restaurant. The kitchen's unofficial father-figure is chef Carl Mohner, who gleefully advises his fellow workers to enjoy life and to seek their heart's desires. But no one is around to boost Mohner's morale when his planned marriage to waitress Mary Yeomans is shot down in flames. This culinary variation of the Grand Hotel theme was the handiwork of screenwriter Sidney Cole. Future "Phantom of the Opera" star Michael Crawford) appears in this episode as Tony Hudson, a young medical student who conducts an after-dinner experiment by hypnotizing Mary Low (Elizabeth Sellars), wife of his best friend Jim Low (Geoffrey Toone). While under Tony's spell, Mary sees and hears a woman trapped in an elevator, and becomes hysterical. Now the only way that Mary can preserve her sanity is to locate that mysterious elevator--and the woman inside.
