Filmmaker Jennifer Venditti crafts a cinema verite-style coming of age story with this portrait of a small-town teen from Maine who struggles to embrace his outsider status while still being shaped by the tragic events of his childhood. It was while casting the Carter Smith film Bugcrush that Venditti first encountered the boy named illy- his eccentric wisdom leaving an immediate and lasting impression on the filmmaker. Later, after casting Billy in the film and preparing to craft a documentary about everyday heroes, Venditti and her crew returned to Maine to spend some five days with the troubled young boy who had commanded her attention. Shunned by his classmates and categorized as a "special needs" student by his teachers, Billy boldly refuses to be victimized by his individuality in an environment obsessed with labels and conformity. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn continue their cinematic study of all things heavy metal with this documentary examining the influence of the much-maligned musical genre beyond the affected cultures of Europe and North America. For those who know the telltale signs to watch for, metal-heads are everywhere. Unfortunately most highbrow music fans just aren't willing to credit these adrenaline-starved musicians with the originality they display by transforming the standards of the style rather than simply riffing on the standard clichés, all the while questioning the conflict that rages across the globe and questioning our habit for succumbing to mass-consumerism. By traveling to such regions as Asia, South America, and the Middle East, McFadyen and Dunn reveal that despite hailing from different cultures and speaking different languages, metal fans across the globe are bonded by a mutual distain of the status quo, and a desire to push the limits of music as far as they can go. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

This documentary presents the personal accounts of many of rock & roll music's biggest stars as they share their personal war stories of life in the music business. In a genre known for its excesses, many stars were eclipsed shortly after they shot across the entertainment sky. Some made comebacks; others died or faded into obscurity. Rock stars such as KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, and Poison give viewers an inside look at the often chaotic rock & roll business. Musical numbers are interspersed with interviews in this production. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide

In the year 2000, the theatrical hard rock band Kiss announced that, after an international "farewell" tour, they would be hanging up their platform boots and bat-lizard costumes and call it quits. This self-described "video fanzine" pays tribute to the band's 27-year career through a combination of still photographs, backstage footage, interviews, and news coverage of the group's many honors. Included are several scenes of candid backstage material, Kiss meeting their fans during a signing session at a record store, the group being awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the group's television appearance announcing their farewell tour and impending breakup. For copyright reasons Kiss UnAuthorized does not include any of the group's music. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

On October 29, 1999, theatrical rock legends Kiss -- in the midst of a sold-out tour supporting their comeback album Psycho Circus -- videotaped a live concert in Las Vegas, NV, with a full multiple camera setup for a later Internet webcast. The webcast, however, fell victim to a massive server crash, and the show was never seen by the group's fans. Kiss: Live in Las Vegas finally makes this concert footage available, with the group (in full makeup) performing a set of their biggest hits for a wildly enthusiastic crowd. As a bonus, Kiss: Live in Las Vegas also features interviews with the members of the group, and exclusive footage of Kiss at the premier of their movie Detroit Rock City. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

None of the group's music is used in this video due to copyright restrictions, and quality of the image varies significantly from segment to segment. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
This program is part of a series that takes a humorous look at some musical genres and their stars. The creative animation series parodies well-known names and styles with often hilarious results. In this episode, the butts of the joke are some hardcore rock bands of the '90s, including KISS, Limp Bizkit, and Marilyn Manson. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide
Sporting elaborate make-up, futuristic leather and vinyl costumes, huge platform boots, and one of the most elaborate stage shows in rock and roll, Kiss was one of the biggest bands in America -- perhaps the biggest -- between 1975 and 1980. However, the band's original lineup splintered after the departures of drummer Peter Criss in 1980 and guitarist Ace Frehley in 1982, and while bassist Gene Simmons and vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley kept the band going with new members, many die-hard fans felt that the group was never the same again, especially after they stopped using their famous make-up and costumes in 1983. In 1996, Kiss fans around the world got the news they'd long been dreaming of when Simmons, Stanley, Frehley, and Criss announced that they were reforming the original Kiss lineup, complete with original make-up and a multi-million dollar stage show, for a world tour, which became the top-grossing touring attraction of 1996 and 1997. Kiss: The Second Coming covers the band's history, explains the reasons behind their reunion tour, and follows the group as they rock and roll all night and party every day in America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Neil Bogart founded a company in the 1970s that he named Casablanca Record and Filmworks. Unfortunately, he died five years later. During that interim period, a number of the company's performers became stars. They included the Village People, Donna Summer, and Parliament. After Bogart's death, the famous Casablanca logo and Rock Steady/Chocolate City label imprints fell into disuse. Years later, Damien Vivona searched for archival footage of some of these performers that had entered the public domain so an inexpensive film could be made documenting this company's brief history. ~ Elizabeth Smith, All Movie Guide
