Attending his 25th class reunion at UC-Berkeley, Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is haunted by memories of his late wife Trudy (played in flashback by Lindy Newton). It is especially painful when Monk is reacquainted with Trudy's old school chum Dianne Brooks (Cynthia Stevenson), who it so happens has been targeted for murder. The very odd and extremely manipulative behavior of another fellow grad, coupled with a suicide note written a quarter-century ago, further persuades Monk that he might have been better off skipping the reunion and staying home. Pleading guilty to her crimes, Syd's mother, Irina (Lena Olin), is sentenced to death. Though there is little love lost between mother and daughter, Syd (Jennifer Garner) nonetheless tries to prevent her mother's execution by writing a letter to CIA director Devlin (James Handy), revealing her father Jack's (Victor Garber) involvement in Project Christmas, an insidious method of indoctrinating future secret agents at an early age -- and one for which Jack used the young Syd as a guinea pig. Meanwhile, Sloane (Ron Rifkin) comes closer to a reunion with his "dead" wife, Emily; and Vaughn (Michael Vartan) is shocked upon discerning the contents of Khasinau's so-called Red Ball. When Angel (David Boreanaz) learns that Trevor Lockley (John Mahon), the father of Det. Kate Lockley (Elisabeth Rohm), is involved in a demon drug ring, it brings back painful memories of his troubled relationship with his own father and his transformation into a vampire. Someone, it seems, is peddling PCP-like drugs that turn normally peaceful demon races such as the Kwaini into killers. Kate reluctantly teams with Angel to investigate, but she's unprepared for the revelation that her dad, a retired cop, is in leagues with the dope-pushers. Soon, though, Mr. Lockley turns up dead, emotionally shattering Kate and further eroding her tenuous alliance with Angel. Nonetheless, Angel rescues her from the turncoat demons who killed her father. Throughout the investigation, Angel is haunted by his memories of quarreling with his father, becoming a vampire, and then killing his entire family. Originally broadcast February 22, 2000, on the WB network, "Prodigal" marked season one, episode 15 of the supernatural comedy drama. Julie Benz, who played Angel's sire, Darla, in several early episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, reprises the role in the flashback scenes in this episode. Pittsburgh Penguins owner Howard Baldwin was the producer of Sudden Death, and the action is set in his hockey arena, in which the Penguins are playing the Chicago Blackhawks. Pittsburgh fire inspector Darren McCord (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is attending the game with his two children. He's quit fighting fires because of a tragedy a few years earlier involving a child he couldn't save. Also at the game is the vice-president of the United States (Raymond Barry), who is the target of a terrorist plot. The terrorist leader, an insane ex-CIA agent named Joshua Foss (Powers Boothe), has masterminded a scheme to hold the vice-president hostage in his luxury suite while demanding that payments be transferred to his account electronically at the end of each period of the game. If he doesn't get his money, he will kill one member of the vice-president's party at the end of each period, and at game's end he will order ten bombs hidden in the arena to be detonated with all 17,000 fans present. McCord discovers the plot while his daughter Emily (Whittni Wright) is kidnapped by the terrorists too. McCord must dispatch the villains and find the bombs, while saving all the hostages. Luckily, he is adept at martial arts. He fights one henchman dressed in a Penguins mascot outfit in the arena's kitchen, and another terrorist on the arena's retracting dome. At one point, McCord switches identities with a player, is sent into the game, and scores a goal.
