Lifelong city dwellers Andrew and Claire move to a dilapidated schoolhouse in the country in an attempt to make a clean break with the past, and learn that starting over comes with its own set of challenges as the locals in their new small town prepare to witness an upcoming eclipse. Shortly after meeting their new neighbors -- an aging widow who lives with her blind niece, Maria -- the troubled couple begins to suspect that isolating themselves may actually be doing more harm than good. Meanwhile, Claire begins to form an unhealthy fascination with Maria, and reconnects with a figure from her past in a desperate bid to overcome the emotional pain that still lingers deep within her. Later, in the afterglow of the eclipse, Andrew and Claire find their lives changed in ways they never could have anticipated. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Slava Tsukerman directed this visually striking story of a man whose past is taking him on an emotional roller-coaster ride. Sasha Greenberg (Sam Robards) is an astrophysicist who left the Soviet Union in 1975 to defect to the United States and ended up designing nuclear weapons for the American military. In 1992, after Communism has fallen and the USSR has collapsed, Greenberg returns to Russia for the first time, and while his visit is prompted by an invitation to speak at a conference on physics, he's soon occupied with catching up with the friends he left behind. Greenberg crosses paths with Professor Gross (F. Murray Abraham), his former teacher and intellectual sparring partner, who followed a curiously similar path, turning his back on the United States to design weapons in the Soviet Union. Several of Greenberg's sweethearts also happen to be on hand, including Helen (Ally Sheedy), an astrophysicist from the United States, Natasha (Oksana Stashenko), a fellow scientist from Russia, and Jill (Jicky Schnee), an activist filmmaker. As Greenberg ponders his present and his past, his imagination carries him back and forth through his life, leading him to a state of mental chaos as Russia begins to move toward a new revolution. Perestroika was an official selection at the 2009 BFI London Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A handful of New Yorkers with little in common cross one another's paths as they try to sort out their romantic and emotional troubles in this comedy drama from writer and director Eric Schaeffer. Sam Blue (Eric Schaeffer) is a single father who is raising a ten-year-old son, Rocky (Christopher Kovaleski), on his own. Rocky was conceived using an egg Sam purchased on the Internet; after being left at the altar by his fiancée, Sam isn't sure he can stand the pain of another romance, though Rocky wishes he could have a mom. Herb Schweitzer (Alan King) is an elderly man with a sour personality who has pledged to honor the memory of a deceased friend by walking from his apartment to a beach in Manhattan. However, the trip will cover many miles, and these days Herb can barely shuffle to the end of the block. Jody Buller (Jill Sobule) is an eccentric street musician who was given a pacemaker for her weak heart as a child. Jody is convinced this means a broken heart would be fatal, despite her doctor's efforts to convince her otherwise. Malissa Zubach (Elizabeth Reaser) is a young woman who dreams of traveling to other lands, but is stuck in a trailer home caring for her dying mother. Hoping to get a sense of the outside world, Malissa persuades pen pals across the globe to record audio tapes in public places so she can hear the places she wants to see. And John McCabe (Charles Parnell) is a man still struggling to come to terms with the collapse of his marriage, brought on by his own infidelity. Mind the Gap received its world premiere at the 2003 South by Southwest Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Award for Narrative Feature. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Written and directed by Raj Nidimoru, this romantic comedy follows the love lives of several Indians who have immigrated to America. Flavors centers around the cross-cultural wedding between American WASP Jenni (Jicky Schnee) and Rad (Anupam Mittal), whose Indian parents (longtime Bollywood regulars Anjan Srivastava and Bharati Achreker) are forced to negotiate a middle ground between traditional Indian culture and the culture shock induced by their blonde-haired future daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, immigrant housewife Sangita (Sireesha Katragadda) is given a reprieve from her lonely existence when her recently laid-off husband spends his days at home with her. Rounding out the film are Kartik (Reef Karim) and Racha (Pooja Kumar), a couple whose lives on opposite sides of the country have left them dependent on electronic means of communication. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi
