Saif Ali Khan Movies

A performer who attained a status as one of the most popular and widely sought-after Hindi-language stars during the 1990s and 2000s, Saif Ali Khan headlined dozens of films in his native India that turned him into a local sex symbol and pop-culture icon. The majority of Khan's features fit the traditional Bollywood mold by traversing the genre boundaries of comedy, drama, musical, and romance, and by each running between two and three hours. In early years, Khan's audience and exposure remained confined to India, though in a short time American Bollywood fans of course gained definitive awareness of his work and his popularity spread -- an occurrence fueled by the release of such international crossover hits as Salaam Namaste (2005) and Om Shanti Om (2007). In 2008, Khan did a bit of uncharacteristic work by providing a voice for the family-oriented, Hindi-language animated comedy Roadside Romeo. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Left to fend for himself, Romeo encounters a wealth of situations he's never known before, including a pack of four strays who terrify him and a tough, mobster-like dog named Charlie Anna (Javed Jaffrey) who patrols the neighborhood. Love and dreams follow two starry-eyed actors across three decades and two incarnations in this splashy Hindi musical. It's the early '70s, and Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) is a young would-be actor who has been playing bit parts in Bollywood musicals while looking for his big break. Om's ambition is to become a film star and win the heart of beautiful screen siren Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone), and his pal Pappu (Shreyas Talpade) and his mother, Bela (Kirron Kher), both encourage him not to give up on his dreams. One day, Om meets Shantipriya on a movie set, and he feels as if destiny is finally smiling on him, but when he overhears her having an argument with studio chief Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal), Om senses things are not as they should be. Before Om can decide what to make of his misgivings, the studio burns to the ground, claiming the lives of Om and Shantipriya. Thirty years later, a bit of Om's spirit seems to live on in Om Kapoor (also played by Shah Rukh Khan), a popular film actor with a large ego and a fear of flame who was born the day the old studio burned down. Despite his fame, Om is lonely, at least until he meets Sandhya (also played by Deepika Padukone), a shy but eager would-be actress looking for her chance to become a star. Om Shanti Om was directed and co-written by Farah Khan, who was a top choreographer in the Indian film industry before moving up to the director's chair, and features guest spots from a number of Bollywood's greatest stars, a few appearing in the form of digital recreations taken from films of the '70s. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan) lives for one reason and one reason only: to protect Devigarh at all costs. Whether guarding the royals themselves or just their secrets, Eklavya could always be counted on to see his job through to the bitter end. These days, however, Eklavya is getting old and his eyesight is failing. Though royal heir Prince Harshwardhan (Saif Ali Khan) had once fled to London in hopes of escaping the suffocating customs of his land, the death of Rani Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore) has now prompted him to return to Devigarh and embrace his true fate. William Shakespeare's 17th century tragedy is adapted for the screen by one of Bollywood's most promising filmmakers in this effort that traces one man's unrelenting jealousy and all-consuming obsession against the backdrop of political warfare in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh. A charismatic chieftain who serves as leader to a notorious gang of outlaws, Omkara (aka Omi) is constantly flanked by his right-hand man Kesu and the devoted Langda Tyagi. Upon appointing Kesu as his chief lieutenant, Langda's pride is damaged so deeply that he sets into motion a devious plan designed to convince Omi that his beautiful wife Dolly is having an illicit affair with his newly appointed strong-arm, Kesu. As the deception drives the increasingly fragile Omi to the breaking point, the resulting chaos sets Omi's once-secure world aflame and threatens to lead to tragedy for all involved. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Bollywood director Homi Adajania's English-language mystery-drama Being Cyrus concerns the enigmatic Cyrus Mistry (Saif Ali Khan), a foster child-turned-drifter who wheedles his way into a troubled Indian family. As the film opens, Cyrus accepts a position as the paid assistant to Dithnaw, once a highly-esteemed potter but now an eccentric, reclusive marijuana smoker who accomplishes little of note. Dithnaw lives with his wife, Katy (Dimple Kapadia) in the hill station of Panchgani, India where he holes up in his house in almost complete seclusion; his skeptical brother, the businessman Farokh (Boman Irani) lives with his wife Tina (Simone Singh) and the men's nutty father, Fardounjee (Honey Chhaya) - a millionaire forced by his two sons into living an impoverished life. Cyrus walks into this eccentric clan and virtually takes over, winning the confidence, step-by-step, of each family member. His constant strategizing and manipulation suggests that the situation is neither as placid nor as innocent as it seems on the surface, and indeed, the sociopathic Mistry harbors a hidden agenda that will soon tear the family apart. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Karan (Saif Ali Khan) is a cartoonist and a self-styled ladies' man. His daily comic, "Hum Tum," playfully explores the battle of the sexes. On a plane from Delhi to New York, he sits next to Rhea (Rani Mukherjee), and she doesn't seem the least bit interested in him. His feeble attempts at flirting go nowhere, but when they have a stopover in Amsterdam, she agrees to spend a few hours exploring the city with him. Karan quickly learns he has little in common with the feisty but proper Rhea, but he won't give up. He ends their contentious time together with an unwelcome kiss. Rhea is outraged and storms off, but Karan insists they'll meet again. And he's right. Months later in New York, he spots her in the park, and she causes a scene with his girlfriend. They don't see each other again until three years later, when Karan is helping his mother plan a wedding that turns out to be Rhea's. They bicker again, but this time, they part on good terms. Years later in Paris, Karan is visiting his father (Rishi Kapoor), when he runs into Rhea again. He learns from Rhea's mother (Kiron Kher) that a tragedy has befallen the girl, and he sets out to help her reclaim her positive outlook on life. Sensing that she needs to be with a straight-laced, boring guy, he conspires with Rhea's mother to fix her up with his shy best friend, Mihir (Jimmy Shergill). Things don't go as planned, and Karan and Rhea find themselves forced to confront their feelings for each other. Former film critic Kunal Kohli wrote and directed Hum Tum, his second feature. The score is by Jatin-Lalit, with lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. The film features animated sequences and a few surprise "guest appearances." ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

As Dil Chahta Hai opens, Siddarth, known as Sid (Akshaye Khanna) is racing to the hospital due to an unexplained emergency. There, he is reunited with his old friend, Sameer (Saif Ali Khan). Sameer calls the third member of the trio, Akash (Bombay superstar Aamir Khan from Lagaan), who tells him he's not going to join them at the hospital, due to an unresolved dispute between him and Sid. The film then flashes back to earlier, happier days, to show us what came between the three close friends. Sid was the studious, serious one, with a hidden artistic side, while Sameer foolishly let himself be ruled by the woman in his life. Akash could never limit himself to one woman. He was a playboy who claimed he didn't believe in love. Sameer found himself unexpectedly falling for Pooji (Sonali Kulkarni of Mission Kashmir), the young woman his parents have tried to arrange for him to marry. Akash's father grew concerned about his son's immaturity, and sent Akash to Australia to work for his company. There, he ran into Shalini (Preity Zinta, who also starred in Mission Kashmir), a girl who once rejected him in a Bombay nightclub. She's engaged to be married to Rohit (Ayub Khan), but as the two spend time together, Akash falls hard for Shalini. For his part, Sid met a beautiful divorcee, Tara (Dimple Kapadia), but his friends and family weren't ready to accept their relationship. Eventually, we work our way back to the present, and find out what's become of the three friends and their romantic entanglements. Dil Chahta Hai, a huge hit in India, marked the feature debut of writer-director Farhan Akhtar. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi
