Ryan Malgarini Movies

Ryan Malgarini grew up in Las Vegas under the guardianship of his grandparents and expressed an interest in a professional acting career from the age of five, when he witnessed his grandmother's involvement in a nationally broadcast television spot. After appearing opposite her (and the late Lou Rawls) in a commercial, and then essaying similar assignments on television spots for McDonald's and Washington Mutual Savings Bank, Malgarini secured Los Angeles-area representation as a child actor. He took one of his earliest onscreen bows with a small role opposite Kevin Spacey and Lena Olin in the grim psychological drama The United States of Leland (2002), then landed turns in the family-oriented outings Freaky Friday (2003) (as the son of Jamie Lee Curtis and the brother of Lindsay Lohan) and How to Eat Fried Worms (2006). In 2008, he signed on to play Tom Barns, the socially backward 14-year-old son of Jay Mohr and Paula Marshall, on the sitcom Gary Unmarried. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The new kid at school faces up to the school bully by taking on a challenge no one has the guts to try in this family-oriented comedy. Billy (Luke Benward) is an 11-year-old boy whose folks have just moved to a new town and is facing the terror of his first day at a new school. It doesn't take long for Billy to run afoul of Joe (Adam Hicks), the school bully, who finds the live bait Billy brought with him and throws it in his face, asking Billy if he eats worms for lunch. Billy tries to gross out Joe by saying yes, he eats worms on a regular basis, and Joe calls his bluff by challenging him to eat ten worms in front of the student body. Billy takes the bet, and suddenly becomes something of a celebrity at school as the first kid to stand up to Joe. Billy also discovers he's caught the eye of Erika (Hallie Kate Eisenberg), a cute girl in his class, but can he actually eat the worms without losing his lunch? With the help of a handful of new friends, Billy preps for the big contest by learning how to eat as much gross stuff as he can, and he gains an unexpected ally in hot-headed Principal Burdock (James Rebhorn). Based on the popular children's book by Thomas Rockwell, How to Eat Fried Worms also features Tom Cavanagh, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and Clint Howard. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

There's no lack of excitement for the citizens of Stars Hollow in this episode. For starters, the members of their Edgar Allan Poe society convene at the homes of Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and her friends after a fire breaks out at the Independence Inn. Elsewhere in town, Luke (Scott Patterson) can't understand how Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) was chosen employee-of-the-month at the local WalMart when he's supposed to be attending school; Rory (Alexis Bledel) tries to pull Paris (Liza Weil) out of her depression over being turned down by Harvard; and the sham courtship between Lane (Keiko Agena) and Young Chui, which was concocted to hide the fact that Lane is dating Dave Rygalsky, goes off on a new and unanticipated direction. And at episode's end, Rory makes a crucial decision. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A high-strung mom and her punky daughter learn what it's like to walk in each other's shoes -- literally -- in Disney's second update of their 1977 teen fantasy comedy. The new-millennium Freaky Friday has disgruntled teen Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) living, sans father, with her uptight therapist-author mom Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and bratty brother Harry (Ryan Malgarini). The angst between the two reaches a fever pitch on the eve of Tess' wedding rehearsal: Anna wants to ditch the proceedings for an all-important band audition, but Tess sees the conflict as a show of resentment toward imminent step-dad Ryan (Mark Harmon). When the whole clan goes out to dinner at their favorite Chinese restaurant, their sage waitress (Lucille Soong) picks up on the tension between the mother and daughter and casts a spell on them via two magic fortune cookies. The next day, Tess and Anna must put up with life in each other's bodies -- until, as the fortune says, they can come to a greater understanding of one another. Freaky Friday was previously remade for TV in 1995 with Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffman in the leads. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Produced by Kevin Spacey, The United States of Leland is a psychological drama concerning the aftereffects of a brutal murder. It's also the first big-studio theatrical release for writer/director Matthew Ryan Hoge, whose previous work consists of the independent comedy Self Storage. Ryan Gosling plays Leland, an imprisoned teenager doing time for the stabbing murder of a disabled boy. Prison writing teacher Pearl Madison (Don Cheadle) gets caught up in the story with the intention of making a book out of it, especially when he finds out that Leland's father is the famous novelist Albert Fitzgerald (Spacey). Pearl's investigation uncovers some of the details and effects of the murder for everyone involved, including the victim's parents, Harry (Martin Donovan) and Karen Pollard (Ann Magnuson). Jena Malone plays Becky, the teenage junkie who is both Leland's ex-girlfriend and the victim's sister. The situation also complicates the relationship between Becky's older sister, Jennifer (Michelle Williams), and her sensitive boyfriend, Allen (Chris Klein). The United States of Leland premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
