In the final episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's sixth season, the SVU team investigates when two police officers, both former army reservists who'd served in Afghanistan, lash out violently at their wives--after experiencing terrifying hallucinations and exhibiting suicidal tendencies. This bizarre behavior is linked to the anti-malaria drug Quinium, which is now apparently being peddled illegally. The climax finds Assistant DA Novak (Diane Neal) taking an unusually personal interest in proving that the Defense Department knew all about Quinium's disastrous side effects but had refused to reveal their findings; and at the same time, Detective Stabler (Christopher Meloni) has a showdown with his estranged wife. Made for television, Phenomenon II is not so much as sequel to the theatrical feature Phenomenon as it is a remake--and as such, it is rather obvious that the film is the pilot for a proposed TV series. Christopher Shyer stars as California mechanic George Malley, who after being literally struck down by a bolt from the sky develops hyper-intelligence, mental telepathy, the ability to foretell the future, and a skill not covered in the first Phenomenon: the power to heal. Unfortunately, George also suffers from terrible headaches, suggesting that his "gift" is more bogy than blessing. Plus, try though he might to use his heightened senses to do good for others, he succeeds only in driving everyone away--including his own mother (Jill Clayburgh). Eventually, it is discovered that George's superhuman brilliance is the freakish result of a brain tumor that will eventually kill him. To best use the time he has left on earth, George hits the road, seeking out people in need of his peculiar talents. . .and, it is hoped, a cure for his fatal affliction. Back when they were junior-high-school "geeks," Melissa and Gabrielle (aka Mel and Gabby) were perennial targets for abuse from the prettier and more popular girls on campus -- especially the beautiful but bitchy Cara Cabot. The most crushing humiliation came when Mel was led to believe that the school's handsomest boy, Drew Hesler, was truly interested in her -- only to be told otherwise in the cruelest and most public fashion imaginable. Eleven years have passed, and Mel (Carly Pope) is now a slim, attractive, high-powered public relations executive, with Gabby (Sara Rue) as her equally well-poised partner. Assigned to publicize a new, trendy restaurant, Mel is astonished to discover that the establishment's owner is none other than Drew Hesler (Brian Austin Green) -- who doesn't even recognize her. Thirsting for revenge, Gabby insists that Mel cook up a scheme that will make both Drew and his partner Cara (Gina Tognoni) look as foolish and flustered as Mel had been back in junior high. But Mel threatens to spoil the scheme by falling in love with Drew all over again.
