Though not commonly recognized in the west, Helsinki, Finland for years claimed one of the most violent and lethal urban undergrounds of any European metropolis. Its checkered criminal history inspired a jarring nonfiction tome, Rööperi - The Years of Crime 1955 - 2005 by Harri Nykänen and Tom Sjöberg, and now this screen adaptation of the same work, which roughly covers the period of 1966-1979. A Finnish-language ensemble crime drama, it intersects events from the lives of characters swept up in this maelstrom, whose outcomes differ radically: some succeed in going straight, and others find themselves sucked back into crime, while still others die violent deaths. All, however, get into crime for the same reason - to escape from destitution - and stick with it for the same reason: because they have attained an insatiable desire for money and power. Director Aleksei Makela filters it all through the eyes of Koistinen, a local cop who witnesses everything as the years unfurl. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

What happens when two young bachelors lose the rent control on their apartment to a vile and greedy new landlord - and prices skyrocket beyond their means? That's the question posed by this zany Finnish-language farce, with satirical elements that topically recall Marco Ferreri's El Pisito and Vera Chytilova's Panelstory. Mikko Kivinen and Heiki Silvennoinen star, respectively, as kidney transplant surgeon Lauri Mustonen and entymologist Pauli Bergström, close friends and roommates who have landed the ideal residential situation: with an elderly female landlord, Lydia Molotova (Tuija Ernamo) who hasn't raised the rent for years, the two young men are living the easy life - until the landlord's conniving heir, Master Sergeant John Molotov (Heikki Hela) receives the place from her as part of an inheritance. He wastes no time in jacking the rents up to obscene levels, then forces Lydia to move in with Pauli and Lauri, which makes the living situation very tense indeed. Circumstances seem poised for improvement when Lydia suggests subletting an additional bedroom to raise extra monies, but no one can foresee the complications this will cause. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Director Aleksi Makela collaborates with screenwriter Marko Leino for this fast and loose look at the life of volatile gold medal skier Matti Nykanen (Jasper Paakkonen). A kindhearted athlete at heart, Finnish skier Nykanen has one Achilles Heel: whenever he's had his fill of liquor and his manhood is challenged, the skilled sportsman can never back down from a challenge. Though his protective mentor Coach (Juha Veijonen) does his best to keep Nykanen on the straight and narrow, the skier just can't seem to resist getting into trouble with bad news best friend Nikke (Peter Franzen). As Nykanen's lack of self-control gradually sets his marriage to the beautiful Taina (Elina Hietala) careening down the path to disaster, scheming pal Nikke sets out to exploit the fame of his high-profile friend by having the skier sing lead vocals in a hastily-assembled pop band. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Finnish filmmaker Aleksi Makela directs the Dogme-influenced downbeat drama Bad Boys - A True Story, inspired by a group of actual brothers who turn to a life of crime. Eero (Jasper Paakkonen), Ilkka (Lauri Nurkse), Otto (Peter Franzen), and Matti (Niko Saarela) are four brothers who are ostracized from the rest of the community. Their only guardian is an abusive schizophrenic father (Vesa-Matti Loiri) who lives in a mental hospital. When they get tired of being outcasts, they start committing robberies. Bad Boys - A True Story was screened at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
