Brian Kelly Movies

American actor Brian Kelly is best remembered for playing ranger Porter Ricks in the television adventure series Flipper (1964-1968). Tall and handsome, Kelly also appeared in feature films such as Thunder Island (1963). Kelly's career came to an abrupt end in 1971 when a motorcycle he borrowed blew up leaving him with a speech impediment and partially paralyzed on the right side of his body. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

The press release for the TV movie Berlin Affair described how "an employee of a sophisticated international murder-for-hire syndicate is assigned to hunt down..." Fill in the blank. Is it (a) his wife, (b) his best friend, or (c) a good chili restaurant? If you answered "b", then you can fill in the rest of this predictable spy caper. Before murderer-for-hire Darren McGavin can finish his mission, he is drugged and beaten up by the bad guys, and romanced by pretty Pascale Petit. Also featured in Berlin Affair are Fritz Weaver, Claude Dauphin, and Berlin Itself. The film bears no relation to the 1985 theatrical espionager of the same name. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Producer Roy Huggins and director Douglas Heyes, Maverick veterans both, reteamed for the made-for-TV Drive Hard, Drive Fast. Brian Kelly stars as a race car driver who would have been better off sticking to the track. Upon hopping out of his slicked-up auto, Kelly gets mixed up in an unsavory love triangle involving Joan Collins and Joseph Campanella. Before long, Kelly has to keep peeking over his shoulder to avoid being hacked to piece by a machete-wielding assailant. Completed in 1969, Drive Hard, Drive Fast was not telecast until September 11, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Longest Hunt is an Italian spaghetti western with Keenan Wynn and Brian Kelly as its prime meatballs. Wynn plays a powerful rancher whose son is an outlaw. As much as he despises his boy's activities, he doesn't want the law to catch up with the kid. So Wynn hires gunslinger Kelly to bring the boy back to the ranch before he ends up at the business end of a rope. The Longest Hunt is not to be found in Keenan Wynn's "official" resume; perhaps it was made during a lull in the shooting of Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Whenever MGM had to hastily fulfill a European theatrical commitment in the 1960s, it was common practice to select a popular MGM TV series, then cobble together a "feature film" from several episodes. The weekly program most often retooled in this fashion was The Man From UNCLE, which yielded such ersatz features as One Spy too Many and The Helicopter Spies. Flipper's Odyssey was comprised of three half-hour installments from the Flipper TV series, which ran on NBC from 1964 through 1968. Brian Kelly, Luke Halpin and Tommy Norden represented the human element, while the lion's share (or dolphin's share) of the scenes were devoted to hyperintelligent swimming mammal Flipper. The episodes included herein find our finny friend coming to the aid of an underwater photographer, a fisherman's dog, and the dolphin's ever-foolhardy young "masters". ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A film crew arrives in Coral Key to shoot the underwater scenes for a horror movie. But the real monster turns out to be more of the green-eyed variety, when young Bud Ricks (Tommy Norden) becomes jealous -- the film cast includes a pretty young actress (Wende Wagner), who not only manages to infatuate Bud's older brother Sandy (Luke Halpin) but also Flipper, which leaves the boy feeling left out and very resentful. Between Bud's unhappiness, and the recklessness of the director (Jack Carr), a near-disaster takes place underwater, with potentially tragic consequences for the dolphin and several members of the film crew, including the "monster" (Ricou Browning). ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Ivan Tors Productions, the firm responsible for such aquatic TV delights as Sea Hunt and Flipper, was the prime mover behind MGM's Around the World Under the Sea. The official stars include Lloyd Bridges, Shirley Eaton, Brian Kelly, David McCallum, Keenan Wynn, Marshall Thompson, and Gary Merrill. The real stars are underwater photographer Lamar Bowen, diving-sequence director Ricou Browning, and the folks in Tors' special effects department. The plot concerns a series of underwater volcanic eruptions. Sub commander Bridges (who else?) heads into the depths to find out the cause of the disturbances. Before the THE END sign presents itself, Bridges and his crew are nearly devoured by a sea monster and sucked into a vortex. Though the film's technology-both on-screen and behind the camera--is dated, Around the World Under the Sea is still credible, not to mention thoroughly enjoyable. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This 1964 sequel to the 1963 box-office hit Flipper is unnecessarily melodramatic at times, but at least it isn't a cookie-cutter imitation of the original. Suzy the Dolphin returns to the "male" role of the superintelligent Flipper, while Luke Halpin reprises the role of Sandy Ricks. This time, Flipper rescues a British family in the Bahamas, who are being held for ransom. Brian Kelly takes over from the first film's Chuck Connors as Ranger Porter Ricks, a role he'd continue to play in the long-running (1964-67) Flipper TV series. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Spanish/Italian Gringo stars Richard Harrison as a combatant in the Mexican civil war. In between bloody skirmishes with the enemy, Harrison takes time out to settle a personal score with his hated foster father. With its Lone Avenger protagonist and its excessive violence, the film has all the earmarks of a "spaghetti western"--even though it was filmed in 1963, a year before Sergio Leone popularized that gore-encrusted genre. Gringo was not released in the US until 1968, after the success of Leone's Clint Eastwood vehicles. Originally released as Duello Nel Texas, Gringo is currently available on videotape under the title Gunfight at Red Sands. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
