Thirty-five years after directing her first feature film, iconic actress Anna Karina once again steps behind the camera for this charming comedy-drama shot in Canada. Jimmy (Emmanuel Reichenbach) and Stanislas (Jean-Francois Moran) are a pair of nightclub performers who play second-rate gay nightclubs as part of a drag act called "Les Lolitas." However, their nerve outstrips their talent, and one eventful night they're been booed off the stage and land in jail after getting into a fistfight when good fortune finally smiles on them. Jimmy and Stanislas are bailed out by Louis Jardin (Woodson Louis), a stylish talent agent who offers "Les Lolitas" a tour of Quebec with an impressive payday. Jimmy and Stanislas leap at the chance, but soon discover they're traveling with Victoria (Anna Karina), a woman in her mid-sixties who can't speak and is putting up the money for the tour. The guys both find romance while touring the wilds of French Canada -- Jimmy hooks up with Susanna (Sophie Desmarais), a nervous teenager with a drug problem, while Stanislas more sensibly pairs up with Pauline (Sylvie De Morais-Nogueira), who works at a hotel where the duo is staying. But Victoria doesn't like to keep Jimmy and Stanislas out of her sight, and in time we discover there's a good reason why she's so fascinated with two second-rate female impersonators. Victoria received its world premiere at the 2008 Pusan International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Absurdist duo Benoit Delepine and Gustave Kervern follow-up 2004's Aaltra with this sparse black comedy in which the recently-fired female employees at a children's clothing factory pool their funds to put a hit on their callous boss. Out of work and down on her luck, ex-con Louise (Yolande Moreau) proposes to her jobless sisters that they do something useful by ridding the world of the man who put them all in their current situation. But while security specialist Michel (Bouli Lanners) seems like the perfect candidate to carry out the hit, his ineptitude is so great that he attempts to sub-contract the job to a series of inexperienced - and highly inappropriate - assassins. Notorious Belgian actor Benoît Poelvoorde cameos as a nut-job 9/11 conspiracy theorist, and actor/director Mathieu Kassovitz turns up as an organic hotelier. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Writer/director Philippe Ramos ponders the formative years of legendary Herman Melville seaman Captain Ahab in this stylized tale of adventure presented in five chapters. When Ahab's mother dies in childbirth, the infant's gruff father (Jean-Francois Stevenin) places his son in the care of his pious aunt Rose Mona Heftre). It is Rose who sparks the imagination of the young boy by teaching him to read the Bible, though when Ahab is reclaimed by his father a decade later the growing boy strives to become a hunter like his old man. Later, after Ahab warms to his father's lover Louise (Hande Kodja), the old man dies and the boy is sent back to his God-fearing aunt. Rejecting Rose and her abusive husband Henry (Philippe Katerine)'s unforginv brand of discipline and infuriated that his aunt confiscated the locket given to him by Louise, young Ahab boldly stages his own kidnapping as an ingenious escape plan. Later, after embarking on a series of youthful misadventures, Ahab is rescued by Pastor Mulligan (Carlo Brandt) after washing ashore on the Atlantic coast. In the following years Ahab learns to fish in the ocean and forms a strange fascination with a whale skeleton on a local shore. Thirty years later, widowed Nantucket laundress Anna (Dominique Blanc) discovers ailing whaler Ahab (Denis Levant) in her garden missing the better part of one leg. Now determined to seek revenge against the creature that left him unable to walk, the obsessive whaler acquires a whalebone leg replacement and sets out with faithful shipmate Starbuck (Jacques Bonnaffe) to take down the whale they call Moby Dick once and for all. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
