Adam McKay Movies
Born in the Windy City in 1968, the television sketch comedy scripter, big screen writer/director, and occasional performer Adam McKay first entered the public eye (and established himself professionally) when he helped found the Upright Citizens Brigade comic improv troupe in 1990, alongside Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Horatio Sanz, and others. McKay subsequently worked at the ImprovOlympic theater in Chicago and joined the cast of SCTV, contributing heavily to its infamous sketch "The Piñata Full of Bees." Later (in the early '90s), McKay auditioned for the cast of Saturday Night Live. He failed to make the cut as an SNL performer, but submitted (highly politicized) material to the program which was so sharp and funny that it secured him a position as a regular SNL contributor (of scripts and occasional short films) from 1995 through 2001. For three of those years, McKay served as SNL head writer; longtime friend (and SCTV alumnus) Tina Fey succeeded him in the role.During his SNL stint, McKay met and befriended funnyman Will Ferrell. Not long after McKay departed from the program, the two formed a professional partnership, teaming up to co-write the summer 2004 big screen comedy vehicle Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy; McKay took the director's chair for that turn. Unsurprisingly, the film -- about an oversexed, chauvinistic, mentally-deficient San Diego newsman in the mid-'70s (Ferrell) -- became a massive hit. It prompted a follow-up, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, with the same pedigree as Anchorman, but this time around, McKay posed a triple threat, not only co-authoring the script with Ferrell, but portraying Terry Cheveaux in the cast.

This big-screen adaptation of Land of the Lost stars Will Ferrell as Dr. Rick Marshall, a quantum paleontologist who has been discredited in the scientific world due to his strident belief in time travel as the cure for all of humanity's problems. After hitting an all-time low, giving a lecture to elementary school kids, Dr. Marshall meets an ambitious young scientist named Holly (Anna Friel), who tells him she has followed all his work and believes he's a genius. Spurred on by her enthusiasm, he finishes building the device that will allow him to time travel -- something he promptly does along with Holly, and white-trash fireworks salesman Will (Danny McBride), after Will leads them into a cave that seems like a promising place to test the new machine. They end up in a world full of dinosaurs, sand, and scary lizard-like creatures known as Sleestacks. His racing partner and lifelong friend Cal Naughton, Jr. (John C. Reilly), never fails to provide him with a hand on the racetrack, frequently performing their trademark "slingshot" maneuver to shoot Ricky into first place, leaving Cal in second. While the public loves these buddies (popularly known by the meaningless childhood nicknames they find so exceedingly cool: "Shake and Bake"), a wedge comes between the two, as Ricky Bobby's longstanding winning-streak is broken by flamboyand French Formula One driver Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), robbing Ricky of everything in an instant as the trauma leaves him unable to drive. Ricky's wife takes his fortunes while Cal takes his wife, and now he's back with his mother (Jane Lynch) and long-estranged father (Gary Cole). After completing the final cut of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, producers were left with enough deleted material to create an entire alternate film--so they did just that. Wake Up, Ron Burgundy uses alternate takes, cleverly edited pre-existing scenes, and additional voice-over narration from the stately Bill Kurtis to establish the story, then follows a completely different plot arc that was cut from the main film. Revolving around the news team's coverage of a radical terrorist group known as the Alarm Clock, Wake Up, Ron Burgundy finds Ron (Will Ferrell), Brick (Steve Carrell), Brian (Paul Rudd), and Champ (David Koechner) arriving desperately at the home of their mentor, near cannibalism in the California wilderness, and ready to kick ass in the hideout of a terrorist group. Marking the directorial debut of Adam McKay, former head writer for Saturday Night Live and founder of the Upright Citizen's Brigade, Anchorman is set during the 1970s and stars Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, San Diego's top-rated news anchorman. While Burgundy is outwardly willing to adjust to the idea of females in the workplace -- even outside of secretarial positions -- he certainly doesn't want his own job challenged. Keeping that in mind, it's no wonder that the arrival of Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), an aspiring newswoman, is, in Ron's eyes, not the studio's most welcome addition. After Veronica pays her dues covering so-called female-oriented fluff pieces (think cat fashion shows and cooking segments), the ambitious Veronica sets her eyes on the news desk; more specifically, on Ron's seat behind it. Not unpredictably, Ron doesn't take the threat lightly, and it isn't long before the rival newscasters are engaged in a very personal battle of the sexes.
