George Montgomery directs and stars in in this location-filmed adventure (for reasons unknown, TV prints credit the direction to one "Douglas K. Stone"). Montgomery heads to South Africa when he inherits a Johannesburg estate. But the place is run down, and the overseers seem surly and secretive. Having been a detective in the States, Montgomery puts his deductive skills to work. He soon learns that his estate is a front for a drug-smuggling operation. Vittorio De Sica delivers a full-blown comic performance as Cesare Celli, an American gangster exiled to Italy and kidnapped by a collection of inept crooks. These incompetents are headed by Harry Price (Robert Wagner), who demands a ransom from Cesare's friends for his safe return. When none of Cesare's friends send money to rescue Cesare from the kidnappers, Cesare is outraged and concocts a scheme for a five-million-dollar platinum robbery as a way to pay Harry's gang back for their efforts and to get his revenge on a world that has ignored him. Cesare trains his collection of nincompoops for the robbery and imports the famed Professor Samuels (Edward G. Robinson) to plan the heist. After a series of problems raising the money for the robbery and obligatory bumblings by the gang, Cesare and his men are ready to proceed with the heist. When Bob Shelbourne (Edward Judd), a rich executive who is separated from his wife, gets involved with Ginnie, Billa becomes envious. Bob gets Ginnie a job in a business run by his father (Francis De Wolff), who doesn't like the cozy arrangement. Billa's schoolteacher father (William Hartnell) visits, and Billa shocks him by revealing details of her affairs. When a gang of London thieves, disguised as policemen, begin robbing other thieves....well, that's just not cricket. Benevolent burglar Peter Sellers, the man in charge of all "respectable" crooks in town (he even offers such incentives as a vacation plan and filmed training sessions!), sets about to ascertain how the renegade criminals have received inside information concerning upcoming robberies. He arranges a temporary truce with Scotland Yard so that both criminal and constable can work together in nabbing the miscreants. Alas, he must now contend with incompetent peacekeeper Lionel Jeffries, who poses an even greater threat than the "mole" who's been tipping off the phony cops (who is closer to Sellers than he'd ever suspect). A beautiful and wealthy woman in the market for a husband believes she has found the right man -- only to discover he isn't especially interested, in this comedy based on a play by George Bernard Shaw. Epifania Parerga (Sophia Loren) is a woman who has inherited a vast fortune, making her the wealthiest woman on Earth. All Parerga really wants is a happy marriage, but her first stab at matrimony, with Alastair (Gary Raymond), is a disaster, and when she visits a psychiatrist in hopes of learning what she did wrong, her analyst, Dr. Adrian (Dennis Price), attempts to seduce her. Parerga is nearly ready to give up when she meets Dr. Ahmed el Kabir) (Peter Sellers), a shy and well-mannered Indian physician who operates a clinic for the underprivileged. While Kabir is personable, he seems to have no interest in Parerga's money and is unfazed by her beauty; convinced he can love her simply for who she is, Parerga decides Kabir is the man for her. However hard Parerga tries to throw herself at him, Kabir refuses to budge, and even after she bankrolls a new clinic for him, he does not respond to her advances. Eventually, Parerga offers Kabir a challenge -- she bets him that he can't triple his profits at his new clinic in three months, while he in turn wagers her that she cannot live without money for the same period of time. Popular British music-hall and radio entertainer Harry Roy is the central figure in Everything is Rhythm. A spoof of Ruritanian romances, the story revolves around the mutual attraction between orchestra leader Harry Wade (Roy) and mittel-European Princess Paula (played by one Princess Pearl, who claimed to be of noble blood). The Princess' advisors disapprove of the affair and do everything they can to break up the couple, but love triumphs over all in a closing floor show. Essentially a glorified quota quickie, Everything is Rhythm benefits from the engaging performance by Harry Roy, who though no actor, is a winning screen personality. The film was directed by former Hal Roach contractee Alfred Goulding, who managed to secure a plum role for another ex-Roach employee, comedian Syd Crossley. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
