Writer/producer/director Chris Angel examines the paranoia of life in the age of terrorism with this drama about a Los Angeles man who attempts to prepare for the worst after becoming convinced that his city has been targeted for a nuclear attack. Carl (Hill Harper) and Vivian Ashby (Robinne Lee) are a young couple just getting started in life. They're attempting to conceive a child, and as Carl spends his days mentoring inner-city teens, Viv goes to work for a progressive candidate for city council. Their ideal life is shattered when Carl begins experiencing a recurring dream in which he fails to save Viv after terrorists set off a nuclear bomb in the city. Upon seeing a news report alerting citizens to a heightened terrorist threat in Los Angeles, Carl finally decides to conquer his fears by becoming more proactive. It's during a seminar hosted by terrorism expert Robert Forte (Eddie Cahill) that Carl first encounters comedian Tom Arnold (playing himself). Arnold, too, is concerned about nuclear terrorism, and hires Carl to design a fallout shelter for his Malibu home. When Carl decides to build his own fallout shelter, Viv begins to think that his paranoia has finally gotten the best of him, and refers him to one of her co-workers, LAPD officer Rick Smyth (Gordon Currie). But Rick has an ulterior motive in talking to Carl, and purposefully gives him bad advice in hopes of driving he and Viv further apart. Though Carl hatches a plan to sidestep the disaster by moving to Canada, Viv's candidate wins the election and refuses to leave Los Angeles. Later, when Carl arrives at Santa Monica Airport determined to get out of the city while he still can, the civil defense warning system goes off, forcing him to decide between making a quick escape, or venturing back into the city to be with the woman he loves. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

CSI: NY, the third incarnation of the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation franchise and the spin-off of CSI: Miami, is a crime drama about forensic investigators who use high-tech science to follow the evidence and solve crimes in The Big Apple.

The true story of the kids who created modern skateboard culture is recreated in this drama. In the early '70s, skateboards were seen as a fad of the 1960s that had all but died out, but in a rough-and-tumble Venice, CA, community known as "Dogtown," that was about to change. Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk), Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch) were three guys who liked to surf the rugged beaches around Venice and hung out at the Zephyr Surf Shop, a store run by Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger) that stocked gear for adventurous surfers and skateboarders. With the advent of new urethane wheels that connected with concrete in a way old metal and rubber wheels could not, Tony, Stacy, and Jay began exploring ways to translate radical surf style to skateboarding, and the guys invented a new way to skate inside the smooth, round surfaces of empty pools, employing vertical moves and edge flips that added a new and dramatic spin to skating. It didn't take long for word to spread about the wild new style of the Z-Boys, and they quickly became local celebrities, and later nationwide skating stars, though sudden fame took its toll on these young men. The true story of Lords of Dogtown was previously the basis of the acclaimed documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys, directed by former Z-Boy Stacy Peralta, who like Tony Alva served as a consultant on this project. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The third entry in executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer's "CSI" (Crime Scene Investigation) franchise, CSI: NY was introduced as "MIA/NYC," the May 17, 2004, episode of CSI: Miami. Making its formal weekly CBS debut on September 22 of that same year, the new series starred Gary Sinise as Mac Taylor, head of the New York City crime lab, whose job it was to use the skimpiest of forensic evidence to track down murderers. A Chicago native, Mac had gotten his police job as the result of his bravery under fire as a U.S. Marine; and like most of major CSI characters, he harbored quite a few personal demons, most of them stemming from the death of his wife in the Twin Towers on 9/11. Taylor's team of forensic specialists included Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes), an outspoken female cop who'd pulled herself up from a murky background (she'd been an orphan raised by strangers) and was the most caustic and outspoken of the CSIers; Don Flack (Eddie Cahill), Yonkers-born scion of a family of cops, who effectively bridged the gap between traditional and modern police methods and wasn't above bending the rules; Mac's protégé Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo), who grew up in Staten Island as part of a suspected (and constantly under-surveillance) crime family, but who'd decided to operate on the right side of the law -- albeit on his own terms; Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper), a Harlem native who'd graduated from college at 18 and became a licensed surgeon at 24, but who felt out of place in the rarefied world of commercial medicine and opted for police work instead; and flirtatious, streetwise forensic analyst Aidan Burn (Vanessa Ferlito). Introduced in May 2004 as an episode of CSI: Miami, the CBS "procedural" cop drama CSI: NY launches its first full season with 22 hour-long episodes. The opener, "Blink," finds NYC Crime Lab head Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) and his team of brilliant, iconoclastic forensic specialists hunting for a serial killer using clues provided by the perp's only surviving victim -- who has lost virtually all powers of communication. Later investigations involve a hungry rat who has swallowed vital evidence, a skeleton found by a tourist which may or may not be a hoax planted to throw the police off the trail of a real crime, and a grisly robbery-murder in Brooklyn in which the victims were systematically shot and smothered to death. Also, a police terrorist-response drill compromises the CSI's efforts to rescue a kidnap victim; a police horse may have to be put to sleep to retrieve an important clue as to the murder of the horse's rider; Mac's protégé Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo) gets a bit too up-close and personal while hunting down a gang of young punks who kill for sport rather than profit; the team tries to determine if a somnambulist committed murder while asleep; three murders occurring simultaneously in three different boroughs might be connected; and the CSIers are forced to turn a mirror on their "own" when the chief investigator in a police-corruption case is murdered before making his findings public. The season ends with the episode "What You See Is What You See," in which Mac must choose to save the life of a shooting victim or immediately chase after the shooter -- a decision that triggers tortuous memories of the death of Mac's own wife during the 9/11 terrorist attack. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In the second of Friends' four special 40-minute episodes which originally ran in February 2000, the magic number is not "40" but "30," as Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) becomes the last of the friends to hit the big three-oh. This sets the others to reminiscing about their own "milestone" birthdays, replete with embarrassing flashbacks. And there's something else: thanks to her redoubtable twin sister, Ursula, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) discovers that she's slightly older than she ever suspected. ~ All Movie Guide

Still harboring what she thinks is a harmless crush on her personal assistant Tag (Eddie Cahill), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) writes a capricious work evaluation for him -- which ends up being delivered to the human relations department. In other developments, the friends make Phoebe's dream come true by buying her a bike, unaware that Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) wouldn't know how to ride the vehicle to save her life. Just before posing for his engagement picture with Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry) becomes convinced that he isn't photogenic. Thus, the nervous Chandler screws up photo after photo with his bizarre facial expressions. In other developments, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) and Ross (David Schwimmer) have more in common than they really care to have when dating two other people; and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) is enlisted to entertain Rachel's (Jennifer Aniston) handsome-hunk assistant, Tag (Eddie Cahill). ~ All Movie Guide
