MacKinlay Kantor Movies
In the course of a 40-year writing career, MacKinlay Kantor found time to contribute to the big screen as both a novelist and screenwriter. Born in Webster City, IA, he was the son of Effie McKinlay, the editor of a local daily newspaper, and he began his career as a journalist at the age of 17. He had aspirations as an author and at age 24 finished his first novel, Diversey, which was not a success. Kantor spent the next six years making a living writing for newspapers. Then, in 1934, he published Long Remember, a novel that became a best-seller and was so successful that the film rights were purchased; Kantor followed the lead and headed to Hollywood, where three of his books were turned into movies over the next few years. The outbreak of World War II drew Kantor back into journalism -- by most accounts, he really wanted to play a fighting role but instead went over to Europe as a correspondent covering the air war. Kantor found fresh literary success in 1945 when he wrote Glory for Me, a novel in verse form that dealt with men in uniform trying to adjust to civilian life after World War II. Despite its being written in stanzaic form, the book was surprisingly straightforward and gritty in its sensibilities about its characters; Glory for Me was well received at the time by critics and the public alike, and it became a huge success. Even before publication, it had been optioned by Samuel Goldwyn and was transformed by playwright Robert E. Sherwood into the screenplay for The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), arguably the best movie that Goldwyn ever released and one of the most honored movies in Hollywood history. Kantor continued writing books and articles, and the occasional screenplay for the next 20 years -- one of his Saturday Evening Post articles became the basis for Joseph H. Lewis' classic film noir Gun Crazy (1949), with a script credited to Kantor and "Millard Kaufman," a pseudonym for blacklistee Dalton Trumbo. In 1955, Kantor published the most successful and influential book of his career, Andersonville, a novel dealing with the Civil War and the notorious Confederate prison camp. A best-seller for years after its publication, it had an impact on 1950s readers similar to that of Michael Shaara's novel The Killer Angels in the 1980s (which became the basis for the movie Gettysburg). It won Kantor the Pulitzer Prize and elevated him to the front rank of American novelists, and later became the basis for the dramatization The Andersonville Trial (1970). His other work included more historical fiction -- Romance of Rosy Ridge and The Voice of Bugle Ann, which were filmed before the war, and the books Gentle Annie, Gettysburg, The Gun-Toter, and Midnight Lace, among many others -- as well as various non-fiction works including Mission With Le May, about U.S. Army Air Force General Curtis Le May, and speculative works such as If the South Had Won the Civil War. Kantor was, in some respects, the literary equivalent of his fellow Iowan, composer Meredith Willson -- his work tended toward the patriotic and optimistic, attributes that were in short supply and little demand as the 1960s wore on. His last direct contribution to movies came in the form of Disney's adaptation of Kantor's novel God and My Country, which became Follow Me, Boys! (1966), the story of a small-town scoutmaster played by Fred MacMurray. During the mid-'60s, he also published an article in Popular Science magazine declaring that he believed in the existence of UFOs. Generally, Kantor espoused conservative political views which, coupled with his patriotic impulses, made him notably less popular during the final two decades of his life, as the public and the literary establishment fell out of sympathy with his outlook. He is remembered today principally in connection with The Best Years of Our Lives, which has endured in popularity and respect for more than 50 years, and Andersonville. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie GuideGeorge C. Scott directed this made-for-television adaptation of Saul Levitt's award-winning stage drama, based on the true story of Andersonville Prison, a notorious Confederate prisoner of war camp in operation during the Civil War. In 1865, Captain Harry Wirz (Richard Basehart) is brought to trial to answer charges of murder and crimes against humanity pertaining to administration of the Andersonville Prison, where 13,700 P.O.W.'s met their death due to inadequate medical care, unchecked spread of dysentery, shoddy sanitation, and lack of proper food. While Wirz and his defense team contend the Captain was only following order and unable to prevent the tragedy, prosecutors counter with the argument that the chain of military command did not supercede his moral and ethical obligations to the men under his watch. The stellar supporting cast includes Cameron Mitchell, William Shatner, Jack Cassidy, Buddy Ebsen, and Martin Sheen. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Follow Me, Boys!, Disney's paean to the Boys Scouts of America, leaves no cliché unturned: we're even offered the old reliable "kid hanging over cliff by rope" bit. Corny, sentimental and obvious though it may be, the film is a delight to watch, especially whenever Fred MacMurray dominates the screen. MacMurray plays Lem Siddons, a 1930s musician who decides to settle down in a small Midwestern town. Here he meets pretty bank teller Vida Downey (Vera Miles), who bemoans the fact that the local boys have no organized activities with which to occupy their time. Volunteering to be a scoutmaster, Lem begins a local scout troop. There are some tense moments when banker Ralph Hastings (Elliot Reid) demands that Lem's scouts vacate their headquarters, but Reid's feisty millionaire Aunt Hetty (Lillian Gish) comes to the rescue. The film's throughline is the regeneration of local "tough kid" Whitey (Kurt Russell), who, after joining the Boy Scouts, straightens out and matures into a solid citizen. The film's lachrymose climax is kept "honest" by the sincere underplaying of Fred MacMurray. Though lambasted by reviewers, Follow Me, Boys! struck a responsive chord with filmgoers, to the tune of a $5.5 million box-office take. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Wind Across the Everglades represents the once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between director Nicholas Ray and screenwriter Budd Schulberg, and a strange little picture it is indeed. In his second film appearance, Christopher Plummer plays bibulous 19th-century Florida game warden Walt Murdock, who declares war on the poachers in his region. This brings him in direct conflict with the legendary Cottonmouth (Burl Ives), the spiritual leader of a group of illegal birdhunters. The highly eccentric supporting cast includes Gypsy Rose Lee as a sensuous farm wife, boxer "Two Ton" Tony Galento as a lout named Beef, circus clown Emmett Kelly as the much-married Bigamy Bob, novelist Mackinlay Kantor as the regional judge, and Peter Falk in his film debut, as an owlish writer. After Wind Across the Everglades, Nick Ray's Johnny Guitar will seem as antiseptic as Heidi. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Another entry in the 3D sweepstakes, Hannah Lee is all but forgotten today. That's too bad, because the film at least has historical interest, representing one of the few forays into directing by actor John Ireland, who co-stars in the film with his then-wife Joanne Dru. MacDonald Carey heads the cast as vicious outlaw Bus Crow, who is paid a substantial sum to wipe out a group of homesteaders. Opposing Crow at every turn is U.S. marshal Rochelle (Ireland), who suspects that Crow is responsible for a recent rash of murders but who can prove nothing. Meanwhile, Crow's erstwhile lady friend Hallie (Dru) turns on the bandit when he guns down an innocent little boy. The title Hannah Lee has far less relevance to the plot than Wicked Water, the title of the MacKinlay Kantor novel upon which this film is based. The definitive Joseph H. Lewis-directed melodrama, Gun Crazy is the "Bonnie and Clyde" story retooled for the disillusioned postwar generation. John Dall plays a timorous, emotionally disturbed World War II veteran who has had a lifelong fixation with guns. He meets a kindred spirit in carnival sharpshooter Peggy Cummins, who is equally disturbed -- but a lot smarter, and hence a lot more dangerous. Beyond their physical attraction to one another, both Dall and Cummins are obsessed with firearms. They embark on a crime spree, with Cummins as the brains and Dall as the trigger man. As sociopathic a duo as are likely to be found in a 1940s film, Dall and Cummins are also perversely fascinating. As they dance their last dance before dying in a hail of police bullets, the audience is half hoping that somehow they'll escape the Inevitable. Some critics have complained that Dall is far too effeminate and Cummins too butch, but Joseph H. Lewis was never known to draw anything in less than broad strokes: recall the climax of Terror in a Texas Town, wherein Sterling Hayden participates in a western showdown armed with a whaler's harpoon. The best and most talked-about scene in Gun Crazy is the bank robbery sequence, shot in "real time" from the back seat of Dall and Cummins' getaway car. Originally slated for Monogram release, Gun Crazy enjoyed a wider exposure when its producers, the enterprising King Brothers, chose United Artists as the distributor. Janet Leigh made an impressive film-debut in MGM's The Romance of Rosy Ridge. Though the title suggests a lighthearted musical, the film is actually a fairly sober adaptation (with slight comic undertones) of a novel by Mackinlay Kantor. In the days following the Civil War, a Missouri farming community lives in a state of constant tension due to conflicting pro-North and pro-South sentiments. Into this situation ambles ex-Union soldier Henry Carson (Van Johnson), who briefly camps out at the farm of unforgiving Confederate sympathizer Gill MacBean (Thomas Mitchell). Suspecting that Carson is up to no good, MacBean is sure of it when the handsome stranger begins courting MacBean's daughter Lissy Anne (Leigh). Things come to a head dramatically when the heretofore easygoing Carson comes face to face with a band of hooded, night-riding barn burners who've been fomenting discord among the farmers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The postwar classic The Best Years of Our Lives, based on a novel in verse by MacKinlay Kantor about the difficult readjustments of returning World War II veterans, tells the intertwined homecoming stories of ex-sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March), former bombadier Fred Derry (Dana Andrews), and sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell). Having rubbed shoulders with blue-collar Joes for the first time in his life, Al finds it difficult to return to a banker's high-finance mindset, and he shocks his co-workers with a plan to provide no-collateral loans to veterans. Meanwhile, Al's children (Teresa Wright and Michael Hall) have virtually grown up in his absence. Fred discovers that his wartime heroics don't count for much in the postwar marketplace, and he finds himself unwillingly returning to his prewar job as a soda jerk. His wife (Virginia Mayo), expecting a thrilling marriage to a glamorous flyboy, is bored and embittered by her husband's inability to advance himself, and she begins living irresponsibly, like a showgirl. Homer has lost both of his hands in combat and has been fitted with hooks; although his family and his fiancée (Cathy O'Donnell) adjust to his wartime handicap, he finds it more difficult. Profoundly relevant in 1946, the film still offers a surprisingly intricate and ambivalent exploration of American daily life; and it features landmark deep-focus cinematography from Gregg Toland, who also shot Citizen Kane. The film won Oscars for, among others, Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for March, and Best Supporting Actor for Harold Russell, a real-life double amputee whose hands had been blown off in a training accident. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Marjorie Main's first solo starring vehicle for MGM finds the formidable character actress cast as a tough-but-tender female outlaw. Living on her tumbledown ranch in Oklahoma territory, Annie Goss (Main) shelters her desperado sons (Henry Morgan, Paul Langton) from the authorities. While planning to pull up stakes and return to Missouri, the Goss family befriends marshal Lloyd Richland (James Craig), who suspects that Annie's offspring are responsible for a recent train robbery, but is hesitant to arrest them because he believes that their motivations were noble. Likewise befriended by Gentle Annie and her brood is a stranded waitress named Mary Lingen (Donna Reed), with whom Richland falls in love. If the film can be said to have a villain, it is surly Sheriff Tatum (Barton MacLane), who unlike the soft-hearted Richland is determined to uphold the letter of the law. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

An Iowa drugstore owner (Don Ameche) becomes embittered when his son is killed in World War II. The druggist believes that the boy's life was cut short before he had an opportunity to truly appreciate his existence. The grieving father is shown the error of his assumption by the ghost of his grandfather (Harry Carey), who through flashbacks details the good things about the son's short term on Earth, and the wonderful life that the druggist himself has enjoyed. Frances Dee plays Don Ameche's wife, while Ann Rutherford portrays his son's girl (who in turn is played in a flashback sequence by former Little Rascal Darla Hood). Happy Land was suitable wartime propaganda, though it doesn't play quite as movingly today. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Wallace Beery trots out his "lovable lout" act for the zillionth time in Man From Dakota. Beery plays a Union army sergeant who, along with his superior officer (John Howard), is captured and incarcerated in a Confederate prison. Upon escaping, Beery and Howard cross the path of Dolores Del Rio, playing a Russian refugee (with a Mexican accent). Dolores helps the escapees in their efforts to reach Northern lines and deliver secret information to General Grant. Based on a novel by MacKinlay Kantor, The Man From Dakota was distorted and truncated so that Wallace Beery would end up with the largest role. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this backwoods musical, two feudin' families provide the basis of the action. The tale begins as the head of one family asks his son to marry the daughter of the other to bring peace. Unfortunately the son knows that it is his brother that really loves the girl and so takes off. The travelin' son has many adventures as he suffers from a rare condition that causes him to lose his memory every time he is struck upon the head. The only way he can regain it is to be splashed with water. While in one of his phases, he meets and falls in love with a young woman until he encounters water; he then forgets all about her and their romance. Romantic mayhem ensues until the whole mess is straightened out. Songs include: "If I Put My Heart in a Song," "Can't You Hear That Mountain Music?" Based on the novel by MacKinlay Kantor, this 1936 drama from director Richard Thorpe stars Lionel Barrymore as Springfield Davis, an avid fox hunter in the Ozarks who relies on his loyal dog, Bugle Ann, to aid in his hunt. When curmudgeonly shepherd Jacob Terry (Dudley Digges) puts up a fence around his sheep, he announces that he'll shoot any dog that comes near his flock, despite the fact that Bugle Ann and the other hunting dogs haven't ever bothered the sheep. Fearful that the dogs could be injured by it in the darkness of night, the fence sets off a feud between the hunters and Jacob, which doesn't bode well for Davis's son Bengy and Terry's daughter Camden who have fallen in love. The situation comes to a head one night, when Bugle Ann suddenly turns up missing. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
