The world's most famous team of astronauts-cum-superheroes returns in the effects-heavy sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. As the story opens, Sue Storm (aka The Invisible Girl [Jessica Alba]) and Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic [Ioan Gruffudd]) prepare for their upcoming, superhero-studded wedding celebration. But Reed cannot stay focused on the nuptials -- he's distracted by wire reports of a bizarre, comet-like object hurtling toward the Earth with tremendous force, triggering brownouts, blackouts, tropical storms, and various other climatological disasters. When the said object hits the island of Manhattan, destroying much of the city in its wake, its identity becomes resoundingly clear. "It" is actually a "he" -- a psychotic villain known as The Silver Surfer (voice of Larry Fishburne) who intends, for some unascertainable reason, to destroy much of the Earth, just as he obliterated dozens of planets before it. Feeling compelled to rally their old gang and save the day, Sue and Reed summon Ben Grimm (aka The Thing [Michael Chiklis]) and Johnny Storm (aka The Human Torch [Chris Evans]) to take on the Surfer -- and end up battling not only him, but an obnoxious Army general (Andre Braugher) and the cantankerous Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon), who has broken out of his icy prison that held him captive at the end of the first movie. A structural engineer (Anthony Hopkins) and an ambitious young district attorney (Ryan Gosling) become locked in a deadly battle of wits when the former is found innocent in the attempted murder of his wife in director Gregory Hoblit's tense tale of courtroom mind games. Ted Crawford (Hopkins) is an engineer who lives with his wife, Jennifer (Embeth Davidtz), in the couple's lavish Southern California home. One day, after carefully planning out the details to ensure that there is no way he can be convicted of murder, Ted shoots his wife in a blatant attempt to kill the woman. When head hostage negotiator Rob Nunally (Billy Burke) arrives on the scene to speak with Ted, he is shocked to find that the victim of the shooting is in fact his longtime lover. Though Jennifer survives the trauma of being shot in the head at close range, she hovers comatose between life and death as star prosecutor Willy Beachum (Gosling) reluctantly accepts the case while preparing to leave the Los Angeles criminal court system behind for a more promising career at a posh private law firm. Though the DA (David Strathairn) vehemently resents Beachum's lofty plan for departure, the hotshot young lawyer remains convinced that he can expedite the apparently open-and-shut case and be on his way to greener pastures in one week's time at the very most. Beachum's swelling ego betrays him, however, as his future boss Nikki Gardner (Rosamund Pike) begins to turn up the heat and fracture mechanics specialist Ted chooses to represent himself at the trial knowing well that a career spent spotting structural flaws in aeronautical systems has instilled him with just the kind of argumentative skills needed to riddle the swaggering young lawyer's "foolproof" case with doubt. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Blockbuster action director Michael Bay delivers a striking look at a strange world of the future in this sci-fi action drama. Midway through the 21st century, Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) lives in a confined indoor community after ongoing abuse of the Earth has rendered most of the planet uninhabitable. One of the only places in the outside world still capable of sustaining life is an idyllic island where citizens are chosen to live through a lottery. Or at least that's what Lincoln and his fellow citizens are taught to believe; the truth is that Lincoln, like everyone he knows, is actually a clone who is kept under wraps to provide needed organs when the person who supplied his or her DNA falls ill. When he becomes aware that his existence is a fraud, Lincoln escapes to the outside world with a fellow clone, Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson), though the powers that be are determined to see that no one gets away alive. Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) finds Kevin Kelly (Jack Kehler), whose daughter was killed by Alan (Albert Hall) in a hit-and-run accident. Kelly witnessed the crime, but was pressured by the police and bribed by Alan to keep quiet. Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) isn't certain whether or not to use the information, but it all becomes moot when Kelly vanishes. Sherry understandably suspects foul play, and calls on Julia (Gina Torres) to help her prove that Alan was behind the disappearance. The sting operation is reaching its climax, but that doesn't stop Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) from going to Tony (Carlos Bernard) with her suspicion that Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) is lying about the provenance of the baby she's brought to work. Tony essentially tells Kim to shut up and watch the baby, because they need to keep Chloe in place. Down in Mexico, Ramon (Joaquim de Almeida) finishes off his brother. Nina (Sarah Clarke) reiterates her belief that Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) is still working for CTU, but Ramon isn't listening. He warns her that his snipers will be trained on her as she completes the deal with Amador (Greg Ellis). Chase (James Badge Dale) is also watching, and waiting to signal the CTU team to move in. After Nina confirms the presence of the virus, and wires the money into Amador's account, Ramon decides to kill Jack, and Chase is forced to intercede. Ramon, Nina, and Amador scatter, with Ramon taking the vial. But it turns out that Amador has betrayed them all. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) learns that Nina (Sarah Clarke) is the other buyer in the Mexico deal. "My father couldn't even pretend to work with her," she surmises. Meanwhile, Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) is tied up, with Nina on his lap smooching him. She senses his hatred, and doesn't quite believe he's turned his back on CTU, but Jack manages to get loose anyway. He and Ramon (Joaquim de Almeida) threaten Nina to get her to cooperate. Hector (Vincent Laresca) learns of Claudia's sad fate, and calls his brother, urging him to call off the deal because Chase (James Badge Dale) got away. Ramon insists on going through with the deal. He's concerned about their reputation. The brothers' argument eventually ends in bloodshed. Chase stays in Mexico to be the forward observer for the Delta team, which is ready to move in once the virus changes hands. Back at CTU, Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) gets Kim to watch the baby, but Kim proves an inept babysitter once again, and Chappelle(Paul Schulze) again considers sending Chloe home. Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) brings in Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) to help him in his "street fight" with Alan (Albert Hall), though Wayne (D.B. Woodside) disapproves. Sherry assures her ex-husband that she has the dirt. "If you play this card," she warns Palmer, "you and Alan Milliken will be enemies for the rest of your life." ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Clark Jr. (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Laughlin (Anthony Mangano) prepare to square off in a charity boxing match. Finding out why IAB Captain Fraker (Casey Siemaszko) is so determined to ruin Lt. Rodriguez (Esai Morales), Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) warns Fraker to lay off if he doesn't want an unsavory incident in his own past to be revealed. While Rodriguez is still out pending the IAB's investigation, interim squad commander Shanley (Alan Feinstein) hits on Connie McDowell (Charlotte Ross), threatening to have her fired if she complains.
