Larry (Larry David) almost drowns while swimming in the ocean. As he later tells it, in a moment of panic, he cries out to God, and is deposited safely on the beach. "Now maybe you'll start to be more respectful to people," Susie (Susie Essman) suggests, but Larry doesn't get her point. With his newfound faith, he decides to go to temple for the High Holy Days, but Jeff (Jeff Garlin) explains that one has to order tickets months in advance, and that the services are sold out. Larry eventually decides to go to a scalper (Paul Ben-Victor). Larry is initially thrilled to learn that his favorite deli, Leo's, has named a sandwich after him. But, when he finds out the ingredients are whitefish, sable, cream cheese, capers, and onions ("That's a disgusting sandwich"), he tries to have it changed. Leo (Ed O'Ross) agrees to allow Larry to change if someone will switch with him. Nat (Shelley Berman) seems to enjoy the whitefish, but suffers some kind of attack while eating it, and has to be rushed to the hospital, where, delirious, he whispers something that to Larry sounds like "You're adopted." Later, Ted Danson refuses to switch sandwiches with Larry, and at temple, he gets into a spat with Richard Lewis, who is jealous of Larry's sandwich. Also, a chief surgeon (Kenneth Kimmins) appears to get "the yips" on the golf course, and when Cheryl (Cheryl Himes) complains about Larry interrupting sex to answer the phone, he responds sarcastically, "Oh, sacred intercourse cannot be interrupted!" ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
Not long after being voted "employee of the month" at a suburban Mega-Mart retail store, Edna Coruthers (Marie Cheatham) is killed in what appears to be a freak accident. Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is called in to investigate by the store's security manager Joe Christie (Enrico Colantoni), who suspects foul play. The assignment proves most distasteful for Monk, inasmuch as Christie is his ex-partner, who'd been thrown off the force for stealing drugs. Despite his animosity toward Christie, Monk manages to figure out that Edna was, indeed, murdered--but NOT for what seems to be the most obvious motive. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Two people are found crucified -- yes, crucified -- at the site of a safe robbery. The surviving victim insists that the perps were two Russians, but this story doesn't stand up the 15th's smell test. In another case, John Clark Jr. (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) hopes that his friendship with a security guard will help him solve the murder of a rap star at his record-release party. Back at the squad, temporary PAA Dave Moore (Dan Bucatinsky) seems more interested in writing scripts than doing his job, John Irvin (Bill Brochtrup) returns early from Africa, and the husband of Rita Ortiz (Jacqueline Obradors) threatens a truly nasty divorce. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Yet another Saturday Night Live alumnus makes his bid for big-screen success as Rob Schneider, best remembered as the "Making copies!" guy, tackles his first leading role in this broad comedy. Deuce (Rob Schneider) earns a meager living as a professional fish tank cleaner until he's asked to housesit for a gigolo. Deuce mistakenly answers the gigolo's business phone and finds himself having sex with a woman he's never met and getting paid for it (not a bad deal, since women generally avoid Deuce like the Ebola virus). It's not long before Deuce learns that there's more to selling your body than one might expect: for example, being re-styled by your pimp or having to explain your new source of income when the owner of the house gets home. Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo was the first feature film produced by Adam Sandler's production company, Happy Madison; Sandler himself makes a cameo appearance, while Oded Fehr, William Forsythe, Eddie Griffin, and Marlo Thomas highlight the supporting cast. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Al (Ed O'Neill) and his buddies try to weasel out of paying beer tax by organizing "The Church of NO MA'AM." Donning an ostentatious pompadour, "Reverend Al" spreads his gospel as a televangelist on Channel 83, asking for donations from the Faithful. An outraged Marcy (Amanda Bearse) plans to expose Al as a fraud with a series of incriminating photos--a plan which backfires when Al wins public sympathy by pulling a "Jimmy Swaggart". . .tears and all. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
This episode was inspired by the recent defections of several long-time CBS, affiliates to the upstart Fox network. It all begins when the ever-outspoken Murphy (Candice Bergen) uses her "FYI" forum to trash her own network's new fall-lineup. In retaliation, network boss Stan Lansing (Garry Marshall) orders Murphy to do a major suck-up job at a convention of angry network affiliates. Somehow or other this leads to a rare photo-op in which Murphy puts her arms around network "star" Jeri the Orangutan. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
