Despite the pressures of his new business, Logan (Matt Czuchry) rushes to the hospital to be with Rory (Alexis Bledel) while the Gilmores await news about family patriarch Richard (Edward Herrmann), who has suffered a heart attack. Conversely, Christopher (David Sutcliffe) is nowhere to be found, leaving Lorelai (Lauren Graham) to worry all by herself. Meanwhile, Luke (Scott Patterson) shows up, offering to run errands for Emily (Kelly Bishop), an act of selfless generosity that makes quite an impression on Lorelai. While John (Bill Brochtrup) is in Africa with his new beau, the squad's temporary PAA is part-time screenwriter Dave Moore (Dan Bucatinsky), whose presence arouses the muse deep within Det. Greg Medavoy (Gordon Clapp). Valerie (Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon) waits an inordinately long time to inform Baldwin (Henry Simmons) that she has miscarried. After their passionate kiss, Andy (Dennis Franz) goes out of his way to avoid Connie (Charlotte Ross). A drunken Don (Stan Cahill) humiliates his wife, Rita (Jacqueline Obradors), in public. Infected with the virus unleashed by Irina's successor Sark (David Anders), Vaughn (Michael Vartan) has but a few days to live. In order to find an antidote for the virus, Sydney (Jennifer Garner) is forced to place her trust in the highly unreliable Irina (Lena Olin). Ultimately, Syd finds herself at the deserted Paldinski nuclear-sub training base in Estonia, where she is confronted by Sark. Pleading guilty to her crimes, Syd's mother, Irina (Lena Olin), is sentenced to death. Though there is little love lost between mother and daughter, Syd (Jennifer Garner) nonetheless tries to prevent her mother's execution by writing a letter to CIA director Devlin (James Handy), revealing her father Jack's (Victor Garber) involvement in Project Christmas, an insidious method of indoctrinating future secret agents at an early age -- and one for which Jack used the young Syd as a guinea pig. Meanwhile, Sloane (Ron Rifkin) comes closer to a reunion with his "dead" wife, Emily; and Vaughn (Michael Vartan) is shocked upon discerning the contents of Khasinau's so-called Red Ball. Finch (Michael Michele) takes care of a manically overachieving high school athlete (Gabrielle Union).
