Israel is not the only nation that demands compulsory military service of its citizens, but it is unusual as one of the few that requires this of both men and women, with some female soldiers being sent into battle along with their male counterparts. Despite women being integrated into nearly all aspects of the Israeli military, the Havat Hashomer training center in Galilee has embraced a unique strategy for basic training. The base is used to train young men for military service who have troubled backgrounds -- histories of violent crime, drug use, contempt for authority and abuse at the hands of their families. The commanders and drill instructors charged with turning these youngsters into soldiers are all female, and many are barely older and more experienced than the new draftees. Filmmakers Dan Setton and Itzak Lerner were given unprecedented access to a one hundred day training program at Havat Hashomer, and in Yes, Miss Commander they offer an intimate look at the interaction between angry, troubled men and the women who try to keep them in line while giving them a chance to make a fresh start in their lives. Yes, Miss Commander was an official selection at the 2009 Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
