Comedian Damon Wayans was so determined to get his "no holds barred" sketch-comedy series The Underground on the air that he financed the pilot episode with $600,000 of his own money. Declaring that he'd felt hampered by censorship strictures imposed upon by his earlier Fox series In Living Color, Wayans promised that his new show would break completely free from the shackles of the over-the-air network "standard practices." Opening each episode with the disclaimer "WARNING: Seriously Funny Shit", the star offered wildly scattershot spoofs of other TV series ("Iraq's Funniest Home Videos") and various forms of popular culture ("The Real Vagina Monologues"), as well as pointed barbs at the urban-culture crowd who'd embraced his own work (one recurring character was "Hypocrip", a foul-mouthed rap artist who lived in the suburbs). The talented stock company--many of whom doubled as staff writers-- included Wayans' own son Damon Wayans Jr., standup comedienne/talk show emcee Gabrielle Dennis, and MAD TV alumnus Aries Spiers, while Wayans' brother Dwayne Wayans suppled the original music. A rich kid who likes to pretend he's from the wrong side of the tracks gets a taste of the real thing in this comedy. Brad Gluckman (Jamie Kennedy) is the son of a wealthy and socially prominent couple (Ryan O'Neal and Bo Derek) and grew up in the lap of luxury in Malibu, CA. However, Brad likes to imagine he's a street-smart gangsta from the mean streets of L.A., and he's been trying to launch a career as a hardcore rapper under the name "B-Rad." Mr. Gluckman is running for Governor of California, and both he and his campaign manager (Blair Underwood) are convinced Brad's antics could have a negative impact on the election, so they come up with a scheme to change his mind about the supposed glamour of street life. Mr. Gluckman hires a pair of African-American actors (Taye Diggs and Anthony Anderson) to impersonate a pair of gang-bangers from Compton who carjack Brad's SUV and take him to the 'hood, where he'll learn just how scary the thug life can be. However, it soon becomes obvious the actors don't know much more about life in Compton than Brad does, and as Brad gets used to his new surroundings, he falls for a girl from the neighborhood (Regina Hall) who has her own plans for moving up in the world. Set in the institutionally segregated New Orleans of 1965, the made-for-cable Passing Glory is the story of black priest Father Joseph Verrett (Andre Braugher) and his efforts to arrange the first integrated high-school basketball game in the city's history. Against the wishes of trepid white parish leader Father Robert Grant (Rip Torn), Fr. Verrett encourages the team members of the all-black -- and undefeated -- St. Augustine High School basketball team to prepare to play the equally successful all-white team of Jesuit Prep. Throughout it all, Fr. Verrett must learn to curb his own impatience over the racial status quo, and to keep his own faith afloat. Although some of the scenes are drawn in broad, unsubtle strokes -- especially those involving the bigoted father of Jesuit Prep's best player -- the film is thoroughly credible, right down to the last-second winning basket.
