Director W.D. Hogan's sweeping period epic Soldier of God unfurls in the Middle East of the late Twelfth Century. As the story opens, the Knights Templar, a religious order originally assigned to protect Christian pilgrims, has disintegrated from chivalric order and justice into dissolute chaos, as its individual factions bloodthirstily vie with one another for power and control. Rene (Tim Abell, a 'warrior-monk' who counts himself among the Templars' ranks, watches as the Christian army surrounding him is all but extinguished in the 1187 battle at the Horns of Hattin. At the last minute, with his own execution only minutes away, Rene is abducted by Brigands on the battlefield, then manages to escape his captors and flees into the desert, where he faces almost certain death from dehydration. At the last minute, Hasan, an enigmatic Muslim traveler, saves Rene's life, and Rene thanks his new friend, in return, by saving him from Saladin's invading forces. The two ultimately seek refuge at the home of the widow Sohelia, who nurses the injured Hasan back to full health. Meanwhile, Rene finds himself drawn to the vicissitudes of simple life in this newfound oasis, and to the temptation of sacrificing his vows as a crusader for a romance with Sohelia. But Hasan holds a long-buried secret from his past that will soon bring Saladin's armies raining down onto Sohelia's home - igniting a violent cataclysm that will change the lives of Rene and Hasan, irrevocably. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) calls into CTU, and lets Driscoll (Alberta Watson) know that Ronnie's been killed, and that he's currently trailing Kalil (Anil Kumar), the terrorist who kidnapped Andrew (Lukas Haas). Driscoll asks Jack for his location, because she wants to pick Kalil up immediately, but Jack thinks the terrorist will lead him right to the compound where Heller (William Devane) and Audrey (Kim Raver) are being held. He refuses to tell Driscoll where he is, so she decides that capturing Jack is now CTU's top priority. Office politics are charged at the CTU office, and things only get more paranoid when Driscoll brings in Marianne Taylor (Aisha Tyler), over the objections of her second-in-command, Curtis (Roger R. Cross). Curtis has had (intimate) dealings with the ambitious Marianne in the past, and doesn't trust her. She immediately begins questioning Edgar (Louis Lombardi) about the day's events. Jack convinces Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) to surreptitiously help him track Andrew's kidnapper. While Jack follows the suspicious terrorist, Chloe works on stealing satellite imagery of the area so he can follow from a safer distance. As Jack watches, Kalil pulls off the road and meets up with two thugs, who proceed to beat the helpless Andrew, demanding to know who he told about what he found on the Internet. Kalil drives off, leaving Andrew to be killed. Jack wants to follow him, but decides he can't leave Andrew to die. After saving Andrew's life, he rushes to catch up with Kalil. Kalil goes into a convenience store, giving Chloe a few more minutes to get Jack the satellite coverage, but she needs more time, and Jack is forced to take desperate action. This exercise in patriotic, high-tech action centers on a select group of Navy commandos and their battles against a Middle East terrorist group. This particular squadron is led by a pair of rivals: cocky, fiery Hawkins (Charlie Sheen) and stoic, unflappable Curran (Michael Biehn). When an anti-terrorist mission goes awry, allowing an enemy leader to escape with a supply of stolen American missiles, both men are certain that, given another chance, they can redeem themselves and the squad. Their rivalry plays out against a background of high-powered amphibious battles, allowing the film to revel in dangerous stunts and advanced weaponry. Joanne Whalley-Kilmer provides brief romantic relief as a journalist with important information, but the focus remains on the macho interplay between Hawkins and Curran. Co-written by former Navy Seal Chuck Pfarrer (with Gary Goldman), the film presents authentic details about the elite unit, but the bulk of Navy Seals tends to rely on familiar combat film conventions. Viewers seeking rapidly paced action sequences will not be disappointed, though other viewers may be less likely to overlook the predictable storyline and routine characters. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi
