In the first episode of a three-part story arc, the staff at Seattle Grace swings into action when disaster strikes on Coleman Dock. A cargo ship has plowed into a ferryboat, killing several people and seriously injuring many more. Some of the survivors are in such bad shape that Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) must literary play God, deciding on the spot who can be saved and who can't. Cristina (Sandra Oh) takes special interest in a grotesquely disfigured and very pregnant "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser), while Alex (Justin Chambers) must keep his arrogance in check as he deals with the victims' anguished relatives. The situations worsens when, while providing aid and comfort to an eerily calm child victim (Madison Leisle), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) loses her footing and falls in the water--and she can't swim! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Everyone seems to be having a Merry Christmas except the people at Seattle Grace. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) can't get into the holiday spirit because she's still p.o.'ed at Alex (Justin Chambers), who for his part is convinced that he'll fail again when he takes his board exams for the second time. Back at the hospital, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) maintains her backbreaking schedule despite her pregnancy; George (T.R. Knight) can't help but feel that his patient's obnoxious relatives are the root cause for her gastric ulcer; and Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Burke (Isaiah Washington) have a theological argument while trying to persuade a 10-year-old to undergo a heart transplant. Finally, though Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Addison (Kate Walsh) have reconciled for the umpteenth time, it doesn't last long--a fact that doesn't make Addison happy, but which may turn out to be the best Christmas present that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) ever had. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The OR staff has its hands full with the victims of a spectacular car crash caused by flagrantly careless driver Bob Seibert. In the course of events, it is revealed that Seibert is a drug abuser, wife beater and all-around louse--and he is also in desperate need of a liver transplant. Ironically, the perfect donor turns out to be the very man whom Seibert killed on the road, placing the surgical interns smack in the middle of a major ethical dilemma. Elsewhere, George (T.R. Knight) is forced to work side by side with the same nurse who gave him syphillis; Webber (James Pickens Jr.) gets what-for from his wife (Loretta Devine) for having brain surgery without her knowledge; Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) do their best to lose themselves in their work and forget their romantic travails; and we finally find out the reason for the rift between Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Addison (Kate Walsh). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Moonlighting as the bodyguard for eccentric Mrs. Hornby (Elmarie Wendel), Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) suspects that the old woman is being ripped off by her business advisor. In other cases, the squad is plagued by the ubiquitous presence of a woman posing as a cop -- a subplot which thickens when the woman's horrible secret is revealed. Pisano (Lenny Venito), the snitch who previously led the 15th to the body of Danny Sorenson, may be the key to solving a robbery-murder at a restaurant. And on a personal level, Andy is not too convincing when he expresses indifference to Connie's (Charlotte Ross) blind date. The squad must deal with a murder witness (Kathleen Doyle) who obviously is not playing with a full deck -- and who is subsequently kidnapped on orders from the suspect's lawyer. Medavoy (Gordon Clapp) and Martinez' (Nicholas Turturro) investigation of the latest in a series of cab robberies unearths a dangerous sibling rivalry. Jill (Andrea Thompson) wonders if her close relationship with Cohen (Michael B. Silver) is a good idea when he tries to strike a bargain with a crooked attorney. And, with Gina out on pregnancy leave, the squad tries to adjust to the new temporary PAA, the ambitious Naomi Reynolds (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick, in her first series appearance).
