Dave Matthews Movies
The South African-born (b. 1967) alternative rocker Dave Matthews burst onto the international music scene in the early to mid-'90s with his ensemble, the Dave Matthews Band, and swept up a rabid and formidable global following, replete with several multiple-platinum albums. He culled a particularly broad fan base among college students, thanks in no small part to his exhaustive tours of the campus circuit. To create its wholly unique sound, the group seamlessly blended Matthews' emotive delivery with intense and occasionally racy lyrics (such as their single "Crash"), and utilized an inventive musical blend of jazz, pop, world rhythms, and traces of folk. Throughout, they also demonstrated heightened musical skill to rival such contemporaries as Blues Traveler and Hootie & the Blowfish.Like many popular musicians, Matthews' motion-picture work, of course, falls predominantly into two categories: concert films and soundtrack contributions. The band's concert films began to appear in 1999, with The Dave Matthews Band: Listener Supported, a set performed at the Continental Airlines Arena in Rutherford, NJ. The ensemble also issued Live at Folsom Field in 2002 and The Central Park Concert in 2003, and participated in the all-star music events Farm Aid 2003 and From the Big Apple to the Big Easy: The Concert for New Orleans (a relief concert for Hurricane Katrina victims); all of the aforementioned specials received home-video issues. The group contributed its most memorable soundtrack work to two films: the 1997 horror picture Scream 2, which featured the single "Help My Self" (on an otherwise dull list of musical selections) and the Adam Sandler farce Mr. Deeds (2002), which prominently featured the hit single "Where Are You Going" from the remarkable Matthews album Busted Stuff (2002). Matthews himself (sans the band) branched out into dramatic roles with two children's pictures -- an unusual and unpredictable choice, given the typical age of his fans in the musical realm. He played the father of the lead in the gentle coming-of-ager Where the Red Fern Grows (2003), about the relationship between a boy and his hunting dogs, and portrayed Otis in the Wayne Wang-directed animal comedy Because of Winn-Dixie (2005). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Based on a novel by Kate DiCamillo, Winn-Dixie and Opal not only become privy to the eventful, if eccentric, lives of their neighbors (including a librarian who fought off a bear with nothing but a novel, a blind woman who claims to "see" with her heart, and a sensitive ex-con turned pet store clerk), but Opal herself manages to reconcile some of the depression left over after her mother had abandoned the family seven years earlier. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

A lot have people have opened rock clubs for a lot of different reasons, but Larry Bloch is one of the few to have opened a music venue as a medium for social change. In 1989, Bloch and a handful of friends, none of whom had experience running a nightclub, opened Wetlands in New York City's Tribeca district, and as part of their business plan, each month a percentage of the club's proceeded were to be donated to a nonprofit Center for Social and Environmental Justice, with the annual payout often exceeding 100,000 dollars. In addition to the club's success as an avenue for fundraising, Wetlands helped give a home to a new breed of bands whose music suited the hippie-esque vibe of the club while opening new territories in improvisational rock, and Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Blues Traveler, and Gov't Mule were among the acts who were regulars attractions at Wetlands before finding worldwide fame. Dean Budnick, a senior editor at Relix Magazine (a journal that frequently covers the jam band scene) makes his directorial debut with Wetlands Preserved: The Story of an Activist Rock Club, which examines both the music and the message behind this fabled venue. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Documentary filmmaker Ron Mann joined Hollywood actor/hemp activist Woody Harrelson as the thespian traveled up the West Coast preaching the merits of natural, organic living, the result of which is Mann's 2003 film, Go Further. In 2001, Harrelson and a group of friends and other like-minded individuals hopped on bicycles -- accompanied by a psychedelically decorated bus converted to run on hemp-seed oil -- and thus created the SOL (Simple Organic Living) Tour. Along the way, the actor made many stops which ranged from speaking at college campuses to meeting up with 1960s counter-culture guru Ken Kesey (who died not long after). The SOL group encountered a number of people that also lead pro-ecological ways of life, as well as some other folks that were just as skeptical or hostile toward the neo-hippies. Go Further premiered at the 2003 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide

Dave Matthews has masterminded his way to the top of the jam band mountain. With his meandering compositions and happy-go-lucky lyrics, Matthews and his back-up band have kids dancing in the aisles of his sold-out performances. Much like his predecessor Jerry Garcia, Matthews stirs awe in his followers. It may be his dimples more than his guitar playing that captivates audiences, or possibly his quirky dancing and jigging that hypnotize; whatever it is, he takes the crowd for a ride. Now, everyone who couldn't score tickets to the last show can bring Dave home and pop him in the VCR or DVD player and rock out in the comforts of home. Finally, everyone can experience the "live" Dave Matthews. With such favorites as "Rhyme & Reason," "Too Much," "Two Step," Don't Drink the Water," and a rousing rendition of the Bob Dylan song "All Along the Watchtower," Matthews rocks the crowd gathered in Continental Airlines Arena in Rutherford, New Jersey. This live set has also been released as a two CD package under the same title. ~ Ed Atkinson, All Movie Guide
