Ellen Page Movies
Born February 21, 1987 pint-sized actress
Ellen Page has done everything in her power to set herself apart from the mainstream. Beginning her career in her native Canada,
Page debuted in the 1997 TV movie
Pit Pony when she was only ten years old, playing the role of Maggie Mclean; the movie was then spun off into a series, in which she reprised her role from the film. Her ability to handle complex emotions and dialogue at a young age impressed directors, and she continued to build up her resumé, consciously avoiding the typical teenage girl roles of most movies, which she found to be sexist. In 2005,
Page took on the challenging lead role in
Hard Candy, a film about a young girl who lures in and traps a man she believes is a sexual predator. Her performance was praised as haunting and real, and soon after that
Page contrasted it with a lighter role, playing Kitty Pryde in 2006's
X-Men: The Last Stand. By then, audiences and critics alike were noticing
Page's impressive screen presence, and she signed on for several projects for the next year, including
Juno with
Michael Cera. She also joined the cast of
An American Crime, playing a true-life victim of torture and murder at the hands of a demented housewife played by
Catherine Keener.
As the pregnant title character in
Jason Reitman's Best Picture Oscar nominee
Juno,
Page served up a brilliant portrait of an articulate teen dealing with the ramifications of such a major life event. Her witty, touching work earned her universal praise, as well as Best Actress nominations from the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Academy, and a host of kudos that dubbed her the breakout star of the year. Following the success of Juno, Page appeared in Smart People (2008), Peacock (2009), and Super (2010). Though all of those film were relatively well-received, the actress wouldn’t experience a resurgence in popularity until she co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2010 psychological sci-fi Inception. Soon, the actress was enjoying her immense reputation by appearing in films like Woody Allen's To Rome with Love. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

In the world of corporate espionage, Cobb is the ultimate weapon. But even weapons have their weakness, and when Cobb loses everything, he's forced to embark on one final mission in a desperate quest for redemption. This time, Cobb won't be harvesting an idea, but sowing one. Should he and his team of specialists succeed, they will have discovered a new frontier in the art of psychic espionage. They've planned everything to perfection, and they have all the tools to get the job done. Their mission is complicated, however, by the sudden appearance of a malevolent foe that seems to know exactly what they're up to, and precisely how to stop them. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

An average guy reacts to the frustration of losing his wife by adopting a crime-fighting persona known as the "Crimson Bolt," and targeting any criminal who crosses his path -- no matter how minor their infraction may be. Frank (Rainn Wilson) is husband to former alcoholic and drug addict Sarah (Liv Tyler), and he loves her with all his heart. Their wedding day was one of but two perfect moments in this Frank's life, but when Sarah runs away with charismatic drug dealer Jacques (Kevin Bacon), the loss was just too much for her mild-mannered husband to take. Subsequently transforming himself into the Crimson Bolt, Frank reasons that if he can take down Jacques along with the rest of the city's scum, his beloved wife will soon come running back. With his homemade suit and his handy pipe wrench, Frank goes to work cleaning up the streets and starts making headlines. But just as the Crimson Bolt becomes the talk of the town, sociopathic comic-store clerk Libby (Ellen Page) reinvents herself as "Boltie," and makes a play to become the controversial street hero's trusted sidekick. Perhaps by working together, the Crimson Bolt and Boltie can make an example of Jacques, and keep the streets safe for average citizens. But real life isn't like comic books, and sometimes when an average person tries to be a superhero, things can go very bad, very fast. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Commercial director Noam Murro makes the leap to feature films with this comedy drama concerning an aging professor-turned-bitter eccentric due to the death of his longtime wife. He's alienated his son (Ashton Holmes) and transformed his daughter (Ellen Page) into a friendless overachiever. Now, at the precise moment Lawrence thought he had finally figured it all out, his life comes crashing down all around him as he falls for a former student (Sarah Jessica Parker) and his shiftless adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church) comes knocking on the door in search of a place to stay. A 15-year-old girl navigates a dangerous urban landscape in search of the brother whom she has hypnotized into believing he is a dog in director Bruce McDonald's pop-infused, 21st century variation on The Catcher in the Rye. When the viewer first meets Tracey (Juno's Ellen Page), she is sitting naked in the back of a bus with only a flimsy shower curtain to guard her from the elements. Tracey is the broken product of an unstable home; her father (Ari Cohen) regards his children as "accidents," and her catatonic mother (Erin McMurtry) only pauses from watching television long enough to light up another cigarette. Upon discovering that a botched hypnosis experiment between Tracey and her younger brother, Sonny, has left the young boy emotionally transformed into a canine, the decision is made to send Tracey to a psychiatrist. Tormented by her classmates and lost in fantasies about her boyfriend and rock & roll savior Billy Zero (Slim Twig), the emotionally complex young woman has become enamored with a new student at school who doesn't even realize she exists. Later, when Sonny disappears, Tracey takes it upon herself to locate her missing sibling and make sure that he finds his way back home. While at first it appears that benevolent rent boy Lance (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos) may be her guiding light through the darkened city streets, Tracey quickly learns that to trust is to place your life in the hands of someone who may sell you out at a moment's notice. Now naked and desperate in the middle of a labyrinthine metropolitan nightmare, Tracey makes it her mission to find Sonny no matter how harrowing her quest may become. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Created by Christina Jennings, the Canadian sci-fi suspenser ReGenesis tackled the up-to-date subject of bioterrorism--specifically bioterrorism generated by the fantastic scientific advances made during the early 21st century. Peter Outerbridge starred as David Sandstrom, chief scientist and molecular biologist for the North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission. Popularly known as NorBAC, this commissioned had been created to investigate (and in some cases terminate) examples of questionable biotechnology. Though mankind had advanced to the point of being able to create "perfect" food, luxury items and even babies in the lab, not everyone was motivated by altruism, and there were plenty of madmen and terrorists with deep pockets who intended to use high-tech science for evil purposes. Though the series was essentially an action thriller, several hot-button ethical and political questions were raised in the course of events (though few were actually resolved). Other members of the multinational NorBAC team included Conrad Pla) as geneticist-medical doctor Carlos Serrano, Dmitry Chepovetsky as biochemist Bob Melnikov and Mayko Nguyen as bioinformatics researcher Mayko Tran. Sarah Strange was seen during the first season as NorBAC's lead viroligist (and David Sandstrom's erstwhile lover) Jill Langston; she was replaced beginning with the second season by Wendy Crewson as Rachel Woods. Similarly, Maxim Roy was originally cast as NorBAC's executive director Caroline Morrison, only to be killed off and subsequently replaced by Greg Byrk as Weston Field. Appearing occasionally was Geraint Wyn Davies as NobBAC's White House-based science advisor Carleton Riddlemeyer. Boasting the input of Canadian molecular biologist Alec Edwards as the series' chief scientic consultant, ReGenesis debuted simultaneously on Canada's Movie Central and The Movie Network cable services the week of October 24, 2004; it would be distributed to several other nations before finally entering US syndication in the fall of 2007. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

When Sherry meets up with SPARKS (Street People Armed with Radical Knowledge) and decides to join the curious group of counter-culture activists in their trek across Europe, it appears as if the idealistic young traveler has finally found a family who will accept her for who she really is. When the SPARKS group arrives in an abandoned Portuguese vineyard to set up their own private Shangri-la, though, their ultimate goal grows increasingly ominous as the heated rhetoric of group leader Harry begins to take a dangerous slant. The first season of the Canadian drama series Pit Pony is comprised of 26 episodes, beginning with the pilot "The Light to the Future", which introduces the people of Cape Breton, a small Nova Scotian mining community in the early 1900s. Two of the town's main families, the MacLeans and the Halls, are brought together when Ned Hall (Shaun Smyth) proposes to Nellie MacLean (Jennie Raymond. Acting as surrogate mother to practically everyone in town is the loquacious Mrs. MacTavish (Mary-Colin Chisholm), whose dispensations of gossip serve to set up many of the storylines and establish the principal characters. The action in the ensuing episodes is largely divided between the everyday dangers and deprivations facing the male mine workers and the patience and fortitude exhibited by their womenfolk. Also, several stories revolve around the antics of the community's children, who just can't seem to steer clear of mischief. And, as is customary in turn-of-the-century mining towns, the sporadic and sometimes violent disputes between management and labor, the perils and occasional tragedies resulting from working deep beneath the earth, and the mundane problems of keeping money in the coffers and food on the table, are all taken in stride. Throughout, the character of Willie (Alex Wrathell, youngest member of the MacLean family, acts as the audience's "eyes", occasionally pausing to accept advice from his headstrong brother-in-law Ned and his surrogate father Charley (Denny Doherty). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
