A medical student with mounting debts draws on her formidable poker skills in order to stay afloat in this gambling drama starring Dominique Swain and Michael Madsen. As a young girl, Alicia "Ace" Anderson (Swain) frequently accompanied her card shark father (Madsen) to clandestine gambling rooms for tense rounds of Texas Hold 'Em. As a result of her childhood spent watching her father fleece his opponents, Alicia became a fairly exceptional card player herself. These days Alicia has left behind the world of gambling in order to focus on medical school, but education doesn't come cheap and the tuition fees are fast piling up. Of course the one way that Alicia knows how to make a quick buck is to fall back on her old skills, and now with a bottomed out bank account and few options on the table the savvy student gambler enlists the aid of some fellow students in hitting it big at the local casino. Though her cohorts may be well schooled in the art of the bluff, this team will need much more than a good poker face if they truly intend to win out over some of the world's best card players. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A woman in search of a new roommate finds that sharing an apartment can be murder in director Keith Samples' belated sequel to the 1992 thriller Single White Female. Things just aren't going well for Holly Parker (Kristen Miller). In addition to her cheating boyfriend, a scheming co-worker keeps undermining every shot Holly has at a promotion, and on top of it all, her rent is simply too much to handle alone. When her search for a roommate leads Holly to shy but sweet Tess Kostitch (Allison Lange), the troubled renter thinks she may have finally solved at least one of her woes -- but this roommate has a big secret. It doesn't take long for Holly and Tess to become friends, but in Tess' warped view of friendship, there is no kinder act than putting a friend in pain out of their misery. When Tess learns about Holly's unfaithful boyfriend and the trouble that Holly has run into attempting to land a big promotion, Tess prepares to do her new best friend a favor and make all of her troubles go away in the flash of a blade. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Directed by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Team America: World Police is a tongue-in-cheek but nonetheless politically biting send-up of the CGI-laden, big-budget action movies that have taken an almost exclusive hold over mainstream box offices, particularly during the summer months. Inspired by the Thunderbirds, a popular 1960s children's series, Team America: World Police uses similarly styled, but significantly more crass, marionette puppets in lieu of computer-generated images to breath life into an elite group of adventurers known as Team America. Their mission: to travel the world, root out its terrorists, and keep evil at bay. Aside from intentionally employing all of the hallmarks of standard action-adventure blockbuster formulas, from a prototypical hero to his communist arch-rival, the film also boasts the occasional musical number. The puppets were created by Norman Tempia along with Charles and Stephen Chiodo, the brothers behind the cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Team America: World Police is not based on Team America, a 1980s series from Marvel Comics, which followed a patriotic team of racecar drivers. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Out of boredom, one of the magic school students conjures up the spirits of Lady Godiva (Kristen Miller) and her age-old nemesis, Lord Dyson (Maury Sterling). If you know your English history, you'll know that Lady G. rode naked through the streets of Coventry to protest Dyson's despotism. Now on the loose in the present, Dyson intends to kill Godiva before she can make the ride that will destroy his power -- and thus the Charmed Ones must come to the rescue of the Unclad One. And in a related development, Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) strips for action as she follows Lady Godiva's example on behalf of contemporary feminism. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The brain-child of director and executive producer Straw Weisman, Man of the Year is billed as a reality/surveillance/improv/drama. In fact, the film was shot in one night, with no script and a cast of about 20 being followed around by an equal number of cameras. The story centers on Bill, a successful oil company executive played by John Ritter. At a party in honor of Bill, the audience is introduced to a number of people in Bill's life, including his wife, Carol (Heidi Mark); his bookie, Mickey (Dan Ponce); and his mistress, Vanessa (Khrystyne Haje). As the evening progresses, the mood of the party goes from festive to angry as all of the secrets in Bill's life become exposed, and his life begins to crumble around him. Suddenly, a gunshot is heard, someone is dead, and no one knows who the killer is. Completely improvised based on a loose story outline and a set of predetermined motivations for each character, Man of the Year premiered at the 2002 Method Film Festival in Pasadena, CA. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

There's been a change of management for criminals-turned-espionage agents Cassie (Natasha Henstridge), D.D. (Kristen Miller) and Shane (Natashia Phillips) as the seriocomic action series She Spies enters its second season. Jack Wilde, the ladies' chucklesome former supervisor at the Bureau of Allied Intelligence Tactics (B.A.I.T.), is gone, replaced by the more sobersided--and more sinister--Quentin Cross (Cameron Daddo). Also, our heroines are now supplied with their high-tech hardware by technogeek Duncan Baleu (Jamie Iglehart), an MIT dropout who has trouble hiding his moony-eyed adoration for the She Spies. Finally, "The Chairman" the much-talked-about but hitherto unseen top man at B.A.I.T., finally appears in the form of actor Bruce Boxleitner)--only to be summarily killed off a few episodes later! In this season's escapades, the girls must protect an abrasive pop star from kidnappers; they go undercover at a dating service; they are abducted by terrorists along with the entire cast and crew of a "reality" TV series; Cassie "celebrates" her birthday by trying to remove a bomb necklace that has been welded around her neck; Shane makes moves indicating that she will soon betray her cohorts, and is later injected with a drug that wipes out her memory; and all three ladies find themselves marooned on a desert island--with virtually nothing to wear, of course! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Charlie's Angels meets It Takes a Thief as three gorgeous female career criminals work off their sentences as secret agents for the Bureau of Allied Intelligence Tactics (B.A.I.T.) in Season One of the "kidding on the square" action series She Spies. For their first assignment, computer-hacker D.D. (Kristen Miller), con artist Cassie (Natasha Henstridge) and pugnacious Shane (Natashia Williams) must save a Jerry Springer type from being murdered right in the middle of his talk show. The ladies subsequently target a disreputable fashion house, a phony charity scam, a fake cryogenics racket, and a band of deadly Icelandic (!) spies! They also show their oft-hidden tender side as they babysit the son of an illegal arms dealer and steer a troubled teenager onto the right path in life. And in one installment, our heroines reminisce about the "good old days" of larceny as they await slow death from a poisoned frog. Throughout, the trio is (sort of) supervised by B.A.I.T. operative Jack Wilde (Carlos Jacott), whom they regard as a feckless buffoon (small wonder that Jack has left the service by season's end!) The first three episodes of She Spies were originally networkcast on NBC; thereafter, the show was confined to first-run syndication. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
