This German animated feature chronicles the punny exploits of the gallant but puny Gallic conqueror Asterix and his clumsy sidekick Obelix. The year is 50 B.C. and Caesar has successfully conquered all of Europe but for one small French village. Within the village is the sorcerer Miraculix who is adept at making magical potions. His most successful brew causes the timid townsfolk to grow courageous and strong before the onslaught of Roman invaders. Though they have consistently beaten the fearsome Latin legionnaires, eventually the Romans succeed in capturing the wily wizard. The conquerors, believing the world is flat, take Miraculix and toss him off the edge of the world. But instead of flying out into a great cosmic void, he ends up in America living with the natives. Asterix, Obelix, and their trusty dog are later sent out to find the magician and bring him home so they can again beat the Romans. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Movie-making cliches are parodied in this German comedy which features to warring actresses, meddling producers, indulgent directors, and an ignored writer. Not only must they contend with each other, they must also deal with the bankers who have the power to shut them down at any moment. The story begins at the premier of director Viktor Rote's newest film "The Tin Cat," which stars his popular wife Riki Rote. The film's writer and Viktor's brother Richard is miffed when he is not allowed into the screening. Viktor's ambitious mistress and aspiring star the Nina is also not invited in. The film is a hit so Rote is allowed to begin his new film by producer George Kuballa. George is also head of the studio. His rich and frequently rejected wife is Lore, a major financial studio backer who prefers spending her time consorting with her handsome young chauffeur. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In this political comedy, a right-wing political party is looking for a suitable spokesman to make their ravingly eccentric positions acceptable to the general public. They find an out of work actor (Harald Juhnke) to serve as their "parrot," and at first it looks as though they have chosen well, as their popularity is now on the rise. However, they hadn't counted on the poor man having something they themselves apparently lack: a conscience. This made-for-television movie was so well received during its scheduled airing that it was later released as a movie. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this slapstick satire, Fritz is a life-long forger of Nazi memorabilia. He got his start as a boy, selling items of clothing as something Hitler wore. His current income-generating scam is to sell "original" portraits by Hitler of his mistress Eva Braun to connoisseurs of Nazi art. He runs into an ambitious journalist who works for a tabloid-style magazine (a thinly disguised "Der Stern"), and the two of them concoct a scam which will garner headlines for the journalist and plenty of cash for the forger. With some care, Fritz creates "Hitler's Diaries," and his creations become a household word before the scam is uncovered. Film buffs may recognize the title of this film as a term Charlie Chaplin used in The Great Dictator to refer to Hitler. This satire hews pretty closely to the actual news story it is based on, but the movie plays it strictly for laughs, a tactic which won great popularity for it in Germany. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The dancing talent of Marika Roekk allows this otherwise routine musical to rise above its limited storyline and banal dialogue. Marika (Roekk) is divorced from a popular composer (Johannes Heesters) and is determined to show him she can make a name for herself without riding his coattails. Her idea is to keep at it until she achieves well-deserved recognition in a musical and dance revue. Since Marika Roekk herself came back from semi-obscurity with her preceding film, At Green Cockatoo, most Germans would easily make the connection to her role in this film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
