In the mid-1990's, when Rudy Guiliani took over as mayor of New York City, he began a campaign to clean up the city, shutting down many of New York's sex clubs and wilder nightspots while turning the Times Square area into a Disney-friendly tourist destination. However, not every New Yorker was happy about the heavy hand being put upon the city's libertine community (especially given the cleanup's emphasis on gay clubs), and Michael Schmidt, a Big Apple party promoter, began staging regular parties at a Tribeca club called Don Hill's as an act of defiance against the new PG-rated New York. "Squeezebox" was originally intended to be a night where drag queens would give up lip-synching to records for the night and belt out their favorite tunes to the accompaniment of a rock band, but in time it grew into an "anything goes" showcase in which gays, straights, punks and club kids mingled in a party that celebrated freedom and self-expression for all as well as a wild good time. John Cameron Mitchell's acclaimed show Hedwig and the Angry Inch began as a workshop production at Squeezebox, and performers who graced the Squeezebox stage included Deborah Harry, Boy George, Jayne County and Antony Hegarty (who would later gain fame with his group Antony and the Johnsons). Filmmakers Steve Saporito, Zach Shaffer and Sean Pierce tell the story behind New York's wildest party and talk to a number of the people who made it possible in the documentary SqueezeBox, which received its world premiere as a special Midnight attraction at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

On September 11, 2001, New York City became the site of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil when a group of extremists brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The event struck to the heart of New Yorkers as well as Americans across the country (and their friends around the world), but an unexpected event helped to heal and galvanize people a few weeks later. The New York Yankees, the Big Apple's perennial baseball powerhouse, had enjoyed a strong season and found themselves representing the American League in the 2001 World Series, with the fledgling Arizona Diamondbacks as National League champs. Three of the seven games in the series were scheduled to be played at Yankee Stadium, only nine miles away from Ground Zero, and both the Yankees and New York mayor Rudy Giuliani determined that despite the attacks, the games would go on, and the hard-fought series became a rallying point across the nation, as fans rooted not just for the Yankees, but for the city they called home. Actors and political activists come together to take a long, hard look at the State of the Union during the 2000 U.S. Presidential election in this documentary, a follow-up to 1993's The Last Party, in which actor Robert Downey Jr. followed the 1992 presidential campaign. In The Last Party 2000, with Robert Downey Jr. unavailable due to drug convictions (he does make a brief appearance, and his legal problems as well as the current state of American drug laws are discussed), Philip Seymour Hoffman takes his place as he visits the 2000 Democratic and Republican National Conventions and talks to politicians and activists both famous and obscure as a pitched battle is fought between supporters of democratic candidate Al Gore, republican nominee George W. Bush, and the many voices who believed neither candidate represented a worthwhile or reasonable choice. Along with Downey and Hoffman, celebrities speaking out on the issues in this film include Courtney Love, Rosie O'Donnell, Reese Witherspoon, and David Crosby; the rock band Stone Temple Pilots also appear at a political rally. Law & Order's 11th season begins with Nora Lewin (Dianne Wiest) taking over as interim D.A. until an official replacement for Adam Schiff can be elected. Lewin's first case concerns a disabled youngster who died of smoke asphyxiation in an apartment fire. Suspects include the kid's parents and one of their neighbors, a person with a history of being in close proximity of suspicious blazes. Astonishingly, A.D.A. Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston), who normally goes for the jugular, believes that "the penalties are too severe" this time around. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
