British leading lady Miriam Jordan was a minor Hollywood star for about three years during the early '30s. She started out as a typist, but after winning a beauty contest, she began appearing on stage in London and on Broadway. After supervising several of the best "psychological" horror films ever made, producer Val Lewton shifted his base of operations from RKO to Paramount. Lewton's first project at his new studio -- and the last -- was My Own True Love, an uncharacteristically sentimental offering. Based on the novel by Yolanda Foldes, the story focuses on the romantic dilemma facing ex-POW Joan Clews (Phyllis Calvert). On the verge of marrying middle-aged Clive Heath (Melvyn Douglas), Joan is introduced to Heath's war-veteran son Michael (Philip Friend). Sympathizing with Michael's wartime loss of his Malayan wife and child, Joan falls in love with him. Unwilling to betray his own father, Michael elects to commit suicide, but that's not quite how things turn out. A genial lampoon of the Greta Garbo craze, Let's Fall in Love stars Ann Sothern as Jean, a Brooklyn-born aspiring actress. It so happens that Ken (Edmund Lowe), an ambitious movie director, is searching for a Swedish actress to replace his temperamental star Forsell (Tala Birrell). In desperation, Ken decides to transform Jean into a Scandinavian film sensation, spending six weeks coaching her in the proper accent and "I vant to be alone" demeanor. The ruse is successful until Ken's jealous ex-fiancee Gerry (Miriam Jordan) exposes Jean as a phony, but by this time the inevitability of a happy ending is never in doubt. The Harold Arlen-Ted Koehler title tune from Let's Fall in Love would become something of an anthem for Columbia Pictures, popping up in everything from Pal Joey to Shake, Rattle and Roll! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Surprisingly original for an independent production, Two Heads on a Pillow is a fascinated precursor to the more celebrated Tracy-Hepburn vehicle Adam's Rib. Neil Hamilton and Miriam Jordan a play couple of young lawyers who fall in love and marry. Thanks to her mother's interference, the couple eventually divorces. Years later, Hamilton and Jordan find themselves facing each other in court on opposite sides of an alienation-of-affections suit. Despite the fact that Hamilton's client is wealthier and more powerful, Jordan wins the case -- and reclaims her own husband in the bargain. Two Heads on a Pillow is distinguished by credible, naturalistic performances by all concerned; even stereotypical Italian Henry Armetta keeps his patented mannerisms in check. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
