To say that acting is not what Michael Jordan is primarily known for is a very large understatement. Jordan was not only the driving force behind a Chicago Bulls basketball team that won six NBA championships throughout the 1990s, but for a whole new generation of professional athletes. Jordan became an institution, with commercial endorsements running from Nike shoes, to Gatorade sports drinks, to Hanes underwear. By the time he retired (for the second time) in 1998 from professional basketball, Jordan was worth millions not only because of his wizardry on the basketball court, but also because of his shrewd business savvy. Well before his retirement(s), however, he had dabbled with acting. He made a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live at the height of the Bulls' dominance, and shortly after ending his first self-imposed retirement, he made the movie Space Jam. Space Jam was very loosely based on his experiences at the end of his minor league baseball playing career, but, of course, with the added twist of being kidnapped, so to speak, by a bunch of unruly Warner Bros. cartoons. Basketball legend Michael Jordan stars in this quirky video about a young basketball player who was cut from his high school team. Jordan, playing himself, meets the young man on a playground and proceeds to try and boost the youngsters apparent lack of self esteem. By walking the young man through his own life, Jordan shows how he overcame being cut from his high school team to become a collegiate and NBA champion; showing that if he can do it, anyone can. The film may or may not encourage youngsters, but the footage of Jordan's career is almost worth sitting through his tepid acting performance. The images of Jordan twisting and turning in air to score an impossible basket will capture the attention of the viewer, not the script Jordan is reading from. Warner Bros. attempted to revitalize its animation division with this family adventure that blended live action and animation in the style of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), reportedly coming in with a price tag of $100 million. Basketball legend Michael Jordan stars as himself, a retired sports hero trying his hand at baseball and failing miserably. Meanwhile, the Looney Tunes gang, led by Bugs Bunny, are kidnapped by aliens called the Nerdlucks. It seems that the Nerdlucks' theme park, Moron Mountain (a barely-veiled dig at Disney) is failing to attract customers. The space invaders are convinced that the appearance of Bugs and his pals Porky Pig and Speedy Gonzalez will beef up business. Bugs makes his captors a deal -- they'll play a game of basketball for their freedom. When the Nerdlucks stack the deck by pilfering the talent of NBA superstars Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing, the Warner Bros. heroes enlist the aid of Jordan, who returns to the court to help the classic characters. While he prepares to play, Jordan is aided by fellow celebrity Bill Murray.
