Julio Chávez Movies
Julio Chávez headlines Argentine director Ariel Rotter's quiet and low-key, Spanish-language psychological drama The Other. The film observes the events that befall Juan Desouza (Chávez), a middle-aged notary who hits a bleak mid-life crisis at the exact moment when he learns that his wife is expectant. Lonely and psychologically incommunicative, Juan heads off on a business trip and then, for some unstated reason, books into two separate hotel rooms under assumed identities. One is that of a passenger who expired on the bus seat next to him, and another is that of a deceased gentleman who owns some property that Juan is supposed to notarize. Meanwhile, Juan silently continues to grapple with a tenuous sense of his own identity. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

In the tradition of such films as Taxi Driver and Falling Down, Rodrigo Moreno's character study El Custodio meditates on deep-seated loneliness - the pain and alienation of being an outcast, a nobody - of being tagged as irrelevant. Julio Chavez is Ruben, the bodyguard to the Minister of National Planning (Osmar Nunez)). Ruben watches constantly from a distance as life (in the form of the Minister's activities) passes him by, but is never once allowed to participate. His life consists, exclusively, of constantly shadowing the Minister - in the limousine, in quiet conference rooms, in vacant hallways. Laconic, soft-spoken and introverted, his only external activity consists of occasional sketching in a notebook, and of tending to his mentally ill sister (Cristina Villamor). Inside, however, a quiet rage and a need for self-expression begins to build, that -- in the film's startling conclusion - pushes Ruben to the brink of explosion. Moreno shoots everything in the film from Ruben's point of view and relies heavily on lengthy, static takes to capture the monotony and emptiness of the bodyguard's life. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Santiago Loza's Extrano (Strange) is an understated character study. Axel (Julio Chávez) is a former doctor who resides with his sister (Raquel Albeniz) and her kids. Axel listens attentively, but hardly ever says anything. After meeting the pregnant Erika (Valeria Bertucelli) and hearing the sad story of her friend's death, Axel moves in with her. Although he almost never speaks, they begin to form a bond that Axel must decide to maintain or sever as the baby's due date grows closer. Extrano was an award-winner at the 2003 Rotterdam Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
