Months after the death of the titular vampire slayer (see "The Gift"), her friends finally seem to be adjusting to life after Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar). Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and Tara (Amber Benson) are living with and caring for Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg). Spike (James Marsters), Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and the others are carrying out routine patrol duty with assistance from the Buffy-bot, whose presence gives the illusion that the Slayer is still alive. Anya (Emma Caulfield) works at the magic shop and longs for Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) to return to England and leave her in charge. Buffy's former watcher finally departs on the very day that Willow finishes her secret preparations to resurrect Buffy. Xander expresses misgivings about this supernatural enterprise, but his Wiccan friend convinces him that Buffy may be suffering unspeakably in some unknown hell dimension. Joined by the Scoobies in the woods outside town, Willow calls on the darkest of magicks to implore the god Osiris to bring back her friend. Unfortunately, at that very moment, a demon biker gang arrives, having bested the Buffy-bot in combat and learned that it isn't really the Slayer. Willow's spell thus disrupted, she and her devastated friends flee, convinced that their chance to bring Buffy back has been wasted. Six feet under a nearby tombstone, however, Buffy's decomposing corpse suddenly reanimates. Originally broadcast October 2, 2001, on the UPN network, "Bargaining, Part 1" marked episode 101 of the cult-favorite series. A new beginning in more ways than one, this resurrection-themed episode also marked the program's move to UPN from the rival WB network. Episode five of the series finds the Master (Mark Metcalf) attempting to fulfill another prophecy. This time, an Anointed One will be turned into a vampire and become the Master's frontline weapon against the Slayer. In the meantime, the Master sends the Order of Aurelius -- special warrior vampires -- to kill Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar). She subsequently kills one them, and in reporting the incident to Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), learns of the prophecy. While Giles attempts to determine the identity of the Anointed One, Buffy attempts to have a date with Owen Thurman (Christopher Wiehl), a sensitive, good-looking student who likes the poetry of Emily Dickinson -- because it's so morbid. The date is interrupted halfway due to the pressing issue of having to save Giles from some vampires at a funeral home, where he went in search of the Anointed One. In coming to Giles' rescue, Buffy fights a large vampire spouting prophecy-like rhetoric, and she assumes that he's the Anointed One. The upside is that Owen, jazzed by their violent date, can't get enough of Buffy. The downside is that Buffy, realizing the danger she put him in, has to break up with him. Unbeknownst to Buffy and Giles, the Master has actually anointed a young boy and taken him into the catacombs below Sunnydale. ~ All Movie Guide

When a pudgy, bespectacled seven-year-old, Olive (Abigail Breslin), voices her desire to take home the coveted Little Miss Sunshine crown at an upcoming beauty pageant, her wildly dysfunctional family sets out on an interstate road trip to ensure her a clear shot at realizing her dreams in former music video directorial team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' quirky feature debut, starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, and Toni Collette. Despite early career success as an outspoken motivational speaker, family patriarch Richard (Kinnear) continues to cling to his "Refuse to Lose" philosophy, much to the chagrin of his increasingly annoyed spouse, Sheryl (Collette). Add into the mix a Nietzsche-reading teenage son (Paul Dano) who has taken a vow of silence until he finds his fate as a fighter pilot; a horny, heroin-happy grandfather (Alan Arkin) with a penchant for creative profanity; and a suicidal genius (Carell) and Proust scholar still reeling about losing both his male lover and his MacArthur Foundation genius grant -- and the stage is set for a road trip in which sanity is sure to take the back seat. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
