When a mysterious boy covered in blood appears in the lazy town of Shallow Valley, the nightmares of the past follow him in this dark tale from newcomer Sheldon Wilson. It's been exactly one year since Sheriff Jack Sheppard (Timothy V. Murphy) found the last-known victim of a brutal serial killer in the throes of death, and his failure to save their life and bring the killer to justice has haunted him ever since. As Sheriff Sheppard begins to close up shop in his remote outpost, the sudden appearance of a blood-soaked boy with a large knife brings a series of tragic memories flooding back to the shaken lawman. Now, with the past standing before him in all its crimson glory, Sheriff Sheppard must look deep into the darkest corners of his soul and face his fears without hesitation if he is to finally solve the mystery that has nearly consumed him, and free a small town from the stranglehold of a vicious killer. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Based on the novel Fatal Exposure, this cautionary made-for-TV thriller stars John Corbett as dedicated scientist and ecologist Evan Thorne. When he tries to warn the authorities that the earth's ozone layer has eroded to such an extent as to endanger all mankind, Thorne is laughed off as a nut case and his career and credibility are destroyed -- largely thanks to the skulduggery of his rival Dr. Schiffren (Tom Irwin), a scientist who has sold his soul to the industrial community. But when whales begin dying at an alarming rate, airplanes crash, corpses catch fire, wildlife goes insane, and deadly insects threaten to engulf Los Angeles, it would seem that Thorne wasn't just whistling Dixie. Even so, it takes the combined efforts of Thorne, his politician ex-wife, Jennifer (Josie Bissett), formerly cynical reporter John Morgan (Bradley Whitford), and gorgeous female scientist Elizabeth Sorel (Jo Anderson) to bring the authorities to their senses and expedite rescue-and-evacuation proceedings. By film's end, the future of humanity rests in Evan's ability to construct a bomb that will restore the balance of nature. A standard disaster flick disguised as a profound pro-environmental screed, The Sky's on Fire was reportedly produced for cable TV in 1998, but did not formally premiere until it was telecast by ABC on July 15, 2000. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Season five of Highlander has quite a few shocks and surprises in store for handsome, 400-year-old Immortal Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul). For several seasons, Duncan has known Adam Pierson (Peter Wingfield), a member of The Watchers, which is an ancient order of mortals foresworn to hunt down and destroy all evil Immortals. All this time, Adam has claimed it was his job to confirm the existence of Methos, the world's oldest man, and a member of the "Four Horseman," one of the most feared of all Evil Immortal conclaves. Now it is revealed that Adam is in fact Methos himself -- but before any damage can be done, he proves to Duncan that he is "reformed" and thus the two become close friends. But all is not well in the Immortal world. A villainous entity named Ahriman manages to trick MacLeod into a grisly act -- that of beheading fellow Immortal Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch), thereby killing him off permanently. Consumed with grief and rage over the death of his best friend, Duncan swears vengeance against Ahriman -- but he, and the audience, will have to wait until season six to see how this turns out. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Season four of Highlander begins as handsome 400-year-old Immortal Duncan MacLeod returns to his native Scotland, which then leads to a tense reunion with Charlie DeSalvo (Philip Akin), the man from whom Duncan bought his Vancouver-based martial-arts store. Charlie is determined to kill a man who once saved the life of Joe Dawson, a member of the Watchers organization which hunts down and kills evil Immortals -- so naturally, Charlie and Duncan find themselves on opposite sides of the fence. This is but one of the many fascinating events distinguishing the series' fourth season. Sporadically coming back into Duncan's life is his former mortal sweetheart, Dr. Ann Lindsey (Lisa Howard), who in one of the year's later episodes gives birth to Duncan's daughter Mary. And in another romantic entanglement, Duncan has an affair with Amanda Darieux (Elizabeth Gracen), a onetime cat burglar who in the course of events has become an Immortal herself. The season ends with another burst of melodramatic excitements, as Joe Dawson is put on trial for his life by his fellow Watchers, accused of the unforgivable crime of revealing the existence of the Watchers to an Immortal -- namely, Duncan. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It is now 1994, and Ward is back in Paris once again targeting helpless young women -- and once again escaping detection. Back in Vancouver after narrowly escaping destruction by an old enemy, handsome 400-year-old Immortal Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) repurchase the martial-arts store owned by Charlie DeSalvo (Adrian Paul), who is off to fight a revolution in the Balkans, as Highlander begins its third season. Working side by side with Duncan is his close friend, and fellow immortal, Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch). It is during season four that Duncan again falls in love with a mortal, an ER surgeon named Ann Lindsey (Lisa Howard). Like the late lamented Tessa Noel before her, Ann eventually stumbles onto Duncan's secret Immortal identity but is determined to make their romance last -- and to that end, she follows along as Duncan takes his annual pilgrimage to Paris. Ultimately, however, the lovers come to a parting of the ways...but the legacy of their relationship will return in subsequent seasons. Among the new characters introduced this season are Amanda Darieux (Elizabeth Gracen), a sexy cat burglar; and Adam Pearson (Peter Wingfield), who like Duncan's friend Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes), is a member of The Watchers, a secret organization of mortals dedicated to hunting down and destroying evil Immortals. Adam in fact has a special assignment: He is to monitor Methos, the legendary "world's oldest man," assuming that Methos is indeed a genuine Immortal and not merely a myth. That both Amanda and Adam are not precisely what they seem to be will not be revealed until later in the series' run. Season four of Highlander ends on a note of high tension, with Amanda unwittingly unleashing a dangerous enemy of Duncan MacLeod, and the Watcher operation in peril of being exposed to the world -- which of course would have disastrous residual consequences for Immortals everywhere. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This theatrical sci-fi action tale is actually the first in a series of direct-to-video features derived from re-edited episodes of the syndicated television show Highlander (1992-1997). Adrian Paul stars as Duncan "Mac" MacLeod, kin of Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), the main character from three previous Highlander features. The MacLeods are two of a race of Immortals, destined to wander the planet forever, capable of dying only by beheading and battling with swords of those of their ilk that have gone evil. Connor appears to help Mac battle Slan (Richard Moll), a fellow Immortal gone wrong, but Slan gets the best of Connor, hurling him from a bridge, leaving Mac to finish Slan off. Months later, Mac becomes involved with another Immortal, Reinhardt (Christopher Ohrt), and his girlfriend Rebecca (Vanity). Believing Reinhardt dead at Mac's hands, Rebecca seeks vengeance for her lover's death, but Mac discovers that Reinhardt, still alive, is manipulating them both. This revelation leads to a final showdown between Mac and Reinhardt. Highlander: The Gathering (1993) also introduced some of the TV series' regulars, including Mac's best friend Richie (Stan Kirsch) and girlfriend Tessa (Alexandra Van Der Noot). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
