Romano (Paul McCrane) surprises everyone when he promotes his longtime nemesis Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) to associate chief of surgery. Returning from his mother's funeral, Greene (Anthony Edwards) is plunged into an argument with Weaver (Laura Innes) over a patient who is to be resuscitated. New second-year resident Malucchi (aka "Dr. Dave," played by Erik Palladino), manages to rub the entire staff the wrong way, especially Carter (Noah Wyle) during a medical crisis at a construction site. And can it be that Benton (Eriq La Salle) is not truly the biological father of little Reese (Matthew Watkins)? ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Things get off to a deceptively light-hearted start as popular professional wrestler Kornberg (Nils Allen Stewart) is brought into the ER with a twisted knee. But the story quickly turns deadly serious when, stuck in the middle of a street riot, Carter (Noah Wyle) is forced to man the wheel of the paramedic ambulance -- and in so doing sparks an even worse situation when he accidentally runs over a youngster. Meanwhile, Carol (Julianna Margulies), still mooning over the departed Ross, receives confirmation of her pregnancy. And Lucy (Kellie Martin) comes face to face with an intransigent Asian family who refuse to let their mother know that she is in dangerously declining health. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Investigating the murder of a young woman who was burned to death, leaving only a tattoo as identification, Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) receives unexpectedly helpful input from veteran cop Vince Gotelli (Carmine Caridi). Meanwhile, Medavoy (Gordon Clapp), endeavoring to steer clear of his marital problems, pulls a double shift, volunteering to protect a numbers runner who's been targeted for extermination. As Medavoy and his charge get to know each other, a friendly game of poker develops -- with not-so-friendly results. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The Temptations make a surprise appearance in the teaser for this episode, which focuses appropriately enough on the world of music (for a while, anyway). David (Bruce Willis) has purchased a pair of symphony tickets from a shady character whom he met on the street. Unfortunately, those tickets were stolen--and now both David and Maddie (Cybill Shepherd) are up to their necks in international intrigue, thanks to a most inquisitive FBI agent (Linda Thorson). The story also involves the assassination of a Russian prizefighter--which explains the presence of Don King! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
In the conclusion of a two-part story, an innocent Laverne (Penny Marshall) has been arrested for bank robbery along with a loudmouthed radical named Sheba (played by former Saturday Night Live regular Laraine Newman). Handcuffed together, Shirley and Sheba are mistaken for a pair of escaped murderers--who have been slated for execution at midnight! Can Lenny (Michael McKean) and Squiggy (David L. Lander) come to the rescue in the nick of time? (They'd better, otherwise the now Shirley-less Laverne & Shirley will be left with no stars at all!) ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Behind in their rent to the tune of 74 dollars, the Evanses are in danger of being evicted. While J.J. (Jimmie Walker) and Florida (Esther Rolle) seek out legitimate sources of quick cash, James (John Amos) tries to literally hustle up the necessary funds at the local pool hall. When he comes home with a sizeable roll of bills, Florida chalks up his windfall to a miracle -- and James isn't about to shatter her illusions. The first episode of Good Times to be produced, "Getting Up the Rent" was the third to be shown, according to contemporary TV Guide listings. Other sources, however, suggest that this was actually the series' debut episode. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
