Sharif Atkins joins the series as Michael Gallant, a new medical student assigned to Carter (Noah Wyle). While making the rounds with Gallant, Carter learns to his chagrin that his grandmother (Frances Sternhagen) is now a "high-risk" patient who may die at any moment; he also helps Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) treat another med student who has been cutting herself. Elsewhere, a mall security guard is driven to desperate measures after accidentally injuring a skateboarder; Elizabeth (Alex Kingston) tries to determine the identity of the person responsible for euthanizing four of her patients in post-op; and, claiming to be Reese's (Matthew Watkins) biological father, Roger (Vondie Curtis-Hall) demands custody of the boy. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Paul (Paul Reiser) really asks for it when he agrees to direct a charity production of The Pirates of Penzance. Meanwhile, Jamie (Helen Hunt) insists she doesn't have postpartum depression, even though she obsesses over her "Dr. Seuss Character" figure. When a gloomy listener places a call to Frasier's radio show, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) flippantly advises the woman to cheer herself up by moving out of Seattle -- or, to use his mocking designation, "The Emerald City." Forced to apologize to his outraged listeners, Frasier succeeds only in making the situation worse. A malfunctioning air conditioner and an overload of patients bedevils the ER during a stifling heat wave. In other developments, Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) is thrown off balance by a visit from her young, irresponsible sister, Chloe (Kathleen Wilhoite). Carol (Julianna Margulies) is upset by Doug's (George Clooney) girl friend du jour.
