Filmmaker Mike Hill profiles one of the skateboarding world's most revolutionary figures in this documentary tracing the life and career of World Industries founder Steve Rocco. Founded in 1989, World Industries made waves throughout the skateboarding industry by ambushing the corporate world to re-write the rules of the game and usher in a refreshing new era of companies that were owned and operated by skaters. While many thought it could never be done, Rocco accomplished the formidable feat with a little help from such talented friends as Rodney Mullen, Jason Lee, Mark Gonzalez, Natas Kaupas, Spike Jonze, and Jeff Tremaine. A cultural revolution that changed the public perception of skateboarding from that of a passing teenage fad to a thriving anti-authoritarian counterculture, the rise of World Industries ultimately resulted in the creation of some of the most unlikely cult heroes in contemporary sports. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The band that inspired some of the most innovative rock acts of the new millennium reunites to conquer the globe 12 years after calling it quits, and filmmaker Steven Cantor is there to capture all the low-lights and highlights of their tentative reunion in a probing documentary exploring the re-birth of Gen-X alternative giants the Pixies. Plagued by personal problems from the beginning but driven to create such classic albums as Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, Frank Black, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering smashed convention to deliver a wailing wall of chaotic but catchy riffs that, when combined with Black's disjointed lyrics and volatile vocals, gave birth to an entirely new sound. Initially self-destructing in 1993 and fragmenting into a variety of compelling offshoots, the Pixies weathered out the remainder of the decade and the first years of the new millennial crossover on their own before a series of jam sessions between the former bandmates led to a wildly successful 2004 North American tour. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

First-time director Samuel Benmchetrit's 2003 debut Janis et John (Janis and John) follows the comedic exploits of a down-on-his luck insurance salesman as he attempts to make up for some very poor financial decisions. Pablo Sterni (Sergi Lopez), the aforementioned insurance salesman, has, until recently, been an honest business man. As of late, though, Pablo had been siphoning money from one of his more successful client's accounts -- one that covers a very expensive sports car. When that client, Mr. Cannon (Jean-Louis Trintignant), turns in a loss claim for that car for a half-million francs, Pablo finds himself in a tight spot. Inspiration strikes when Pablo learns that his hippy-dippy cousin Leon (Christopher Lambert, billed as Christophe Lambert) has just inherited a million francs from his recently deceased father. Leon, a perpetually stoned record store owner, lives solely for the day his 1973 vision of John Lennon and Janis Joplin's Christ-like return to Earth is fulfilled. After visiting with his cousin, Pablo decides to assist Leon in reliving his dream -- as well as parting him with much of his inheritance -- by convincing his wallflower wife, Brigitte (Marie Trintignant, murdered mere weeks before the film's debut, thus marking her final film appearance) and an out-of-work actor (François Cluzet) to impersonate Janis and John. Janis et John was selected for inclusion in the 2003 Montreal World Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide

Formed in 1986, the Pixies were one of the most influential alternative rock bands of their time. Grafting fractured pop melodies with noisy guitar figures and a muscular, walloping rhythm section, the Pixies played music that was aggressive and engaging at once, and Nirvana were just one of the many bands who credited them as a major influence. The Pixies is a video collection which features a full 1988 Pixies show, shot during the group's first British tour; songs include "Gigantic," "Bone Machine," "Tony's Theme," "Hey," "In Heaven," and ten more. Also included are studio-shot videos for seven songs, a look at life on the road for the Pixies, and Gouge, a documentary on the band's history and impact. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
