Brion James Movies

Actor Brion James launched his career in television and feature films and on television in the mid '70s. With his piercing eyes and cruel smile, the versatile, 6' 3"James, usually portrays assorted eccentric bad-guys, urban scum, and red-necks. One of his most memorable roles was Leon, an android in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982). As his father owned a movie theater in Beaumont, California, James spent most of his life around movies . Following high school, James moved to New York City where he became a cook and butler for Stella Adler, a renowned drama coach. While in the Big Apple, James also appeared off-Broadway, and as a stand-up comedian. In 1973, he returned to Los Angeles to become a full time actor with the philosophy that he would never turn down a job. James's strategy has worked, and since then he has appeared in over 100 TV shows and 70 features. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This unusual comedy-drama, set in an experimental psychiatric institute, is a departure for genre director Philippe Mora, whose usual oeuvre is science fiction, horror, and low-budget action films. Rene Auberjonois stars as Dr. Sam Cohen, director of the Temporal Displacement Foundation. Cohen's highly-offbeat but well-funded mission is to treat psychotic patients whose particular dysfunction is the belief that they are famous historical figures, with the chief therapy being psychodrama, the reenactment of passages from that figure's life. Although he has some patients who believe themselves to be artists or religious icons (Mick Fleetwood as Pablo Picasso and Jesse Grey Walken as Jesus Christ), Cohen's star patient (Angus MacFadyen) believes himself to be Adolf Hitler. The clever, mentally ill genius has inexorably drawn several fellow patients into his delusion, including Tessa (T.C. Warner), who now believes herself to be Eva Braun. Enacting the part of Hitler's father, Cohen hopes for a breakthrough with the group. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

A man trying to escape his criminal past becomes involved with a woman born under a bad sign in this crime drama. Frank T. When Scarlet discovers Frank's initials are F.T.W., she believes it means that they were meant to be together, and they quickly fall into a relationship as Scarlet supports herself the way she knows best, armed robbery. This well-crafted Canadian monster movie pits a rag-tag crew of cops, gravediggers, and the requisite scientist against a giant subterranean rodent that tunnels beneath graveyards and lives off the interred bodies. Scientist Dr. Henderson (Stephen McHattie) wants to analyze the beast's body chemistry, which he believes has healing properties, but he continually butts heads with a vengeful, violent cop (Brion James) whose partner was swallowed up by the creature. Henderson enlists the aid of a waitress (Cynthia Belliveau), a pair of gravediggers, and a pretty sheriff's deputy (Neve Campbell) in hunting the mega-rodent, but his plans turn awry thanks to the murderous meddling of the cop, who proves to be far more monstrous than the monster. Director Craig Pryce keeps the monster shrouded in darkness for much of the film, and its climactic appearance is not disappointing. Excellent performances, a tight script, and good use of the claustrophobic sets make this effective chiller worth seeking out. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Overkill: The Aileen Wuornos Story stars Jean Smart as the title character. One of the rare female serial killers on record, Wuornos was eventually charged with murdering seven men on lonely Florida roads. The killing spree took place between 1990 and 1991, thus this 1992 TV movie could pat itself on the back for its timeliness. At the time Overkill was made, there was some public doubt concerning Wuornos' guilt (she was then on death row). The script suggests that her crimes were a by-product of childhood sexual abuse. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

At times, Another 48 Hrs. seems less like a sequel to than a parody of the first 48 Hrs., especially when Nick Nolte, repeating his role from the earlier film, begins commenting on the cliched absurdity of the goings on. This time, Nolte risks life, limb and career as he obsessively tries to bring an elusive master criminal known as "The Iceman" to justice. Eddie Murphy, who stole the show in the first 48 Hrs. as the wheeler-dealer convict who becomes Nolte's reluctant partner, is brought into the plotline of the second film when a contract is taken out on his life. The adversarial relationship between Nolte and Murphy, supposedly dissipated by the end of the first film, is revivified in the sequel via a couple of plot devices. Still, Murphy rallies to the occasion, in the process saving Nolte from being thrown off the force. Though not as successful as the first film, Another 48 Hrs. proved that there were still enough Eddie Murphy fans around in 1990 to insure a strong box-office showing. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Beyond the Silhouette a Canadian-made, silly, erotic political thriller uses so many pretentious effects and dream sequences that it is almost impossible to follow the story. Samatha Stewart (Tracy Scoggins) is a prim public defender who gives a ride to Vicky (Suzy Joachim) a sexy prostitute running from some hit men and hiding a valuable broach. Before she is murdered, Vicky gives the broach to Samatha who then becomes Vicky's alter-ego, eventually becoming a prostitute. This direct-to-video erotic thriller will disappoint those looking for softcore sex. While Scoggins is quite beautiful, she does little more than model a variety of sexy lingerie and the sex scenes are infrequent. Those looking for good erotic thrillers might well look elsewhere. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide
