To alleviate all the professional and domestic pressures that have been weighing down Clair (Phylicia Rashad) in the last few weeks, Cliff (Bill Cosby) declares a "You're Not a Mother Night." Proving that he's not kidding about liberating Clair from her maternal duties, Cliff takes her out on a date, beginning with a fancy dinner and culminating with a passionate night at the Biltmore Hotel. Meanwhile, daughter Denise (Lisa Bonet) stays home and takes care of her younger sisters, Theo (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) screens Cliff's phone calls and Vanessa (Tempestt Bledsoe) and Rudy (Keshia Knight Pulliam) cook up a few somewhat questionable jokes to spring upon their parents! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Mary (Mary Tyler Moore) goes out on a date with Ross Nelson (Anthony Nelson), the news anchor for Minneapolis' top-rated TV station. Under Nelson's influence, Mary develops a whale of an inferiority complex, becoming more convinced than ever that the newsroom at her own WJM-TV just plain doesn't measure up. This leads to an ethical dilemma that has a trickle-down effect on everyone within Mary's orbit. "WJM Tries Harder" was first telecast on January 5, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Fans of the The Mary Tyler Moore Show spin-off Rhoda will recall that heroine Rhoda Morganstern (Valerie Harper) has a neurotic younger sister named Brenda. However, in this Mary Tyler Moore episode, Brenda is nowhere to be found; instead, Rhoda has suddenly acquired a kid sister named Debbie (Liberty Williams), who has never been seen before and will never be seen again. No matter, as Debbie serves an important plot purpose when Rhoda and Mary (Mary Tyler Moore) head to New York to attend Debbie's wedding -- an occasion made both memorable and unbearable by Rhoda's mother, Ida (Nancy Walker), who has convinced herself that the air is thick with sibling jealousy. "Rhoda's Sister Gets Married" was originally broadcast on September 29, 1973. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
