As the fourth season of 24 begins, terrorists blow up a train, and steal a mysterious briefcase from a passenger onboard. At CTU, Erin Driscoll (Alberta Watson) is running things, and she has fired Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) over his heroin addiction. Jack is now working for Secretary of Defense James Heller (William Devane) and is romantically involved with Heller's daughter and aide, Audrey (Kim Raver). Jack wants to tell Heller about their relationship, but Audrey is hesitant because she is still legally married to her estranged husband. Word reaches CTU of the train bombing, and Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) notices that one Tomas Sherek (Faran Tahir), on their terrorist watch list, was recently spotted in L.A. Andrew Paige (Lukas Haas), a hacker, discovers some nodes indicating that someone is plotting a massive corruption of the Internet. He calls his old classmate, Chloe, who sees a possible connection to the terrorist attack, but Driscoll insists that Chloe focus on the bombing and on finding Sherek, ordering Chloe to pass Andrew's concerns along to the FBI. Andrew returns to his office to find that his discovery has not gone unnoticed, and his life is in danger. Jack arrives at CTU on budgetary business in time to help his replacement in the field, Ronnie Lobell (Shawn Doyle), apprehend Sherek. Jack realizes that a terrorist of Sherek's stature would not risk exposure over the bombing. Meanwhile, Audrey accompanies Heller as he visits his rebellious son, Richard (Logan Marshall-Green), and they argue over Richard's plans to denounce his father at an upcoming protest. A suburban couple, Navi (Nestor Serrano) and Dina Araz (Shohreh Aghdashloo), and their teenage son, Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout), have a connection to the terrorist plot. A tormented Kovac (Goran Visnjic) precipitates a barroom brawl and later lobbies unsuccessfully to operate on an ailing Croatian child. Demoted from surgery, Romano (Paul McCrane) becomes more irksome than ever before when he is placed in charge of the ER. A mother-to-be must choose between giving birth to her child or undergoing life-saving chemotherapy. Chen's (Ming-Na) birthday is spoiled by Pratt's (Mekhi Phifer) ill-advised gift. This 200th episode of ER (actually the 201st in the syndicated package) occurs during a solar eclipse, with the action alternating between the day and night shifts at County General. Holding down the day shift is a bone-weary Carter (Noah Wyle), who must contend with the victims of a cult mass suicide, among many other trying cases. And during the night shift, Pratt (Mekhi Phifer), ostensibly making his final round as a resident, is "redeemed" as he treats a woman whose unborn child was viciously cut from her womb. Elsewhere, Corday (Alex Kingston) has returned to Chicago, only to be immediately unnerved by the bizarre behavior of Weaver (Laura Innes). During his first shift, Nathan plunges in to help the other staffers treat the victims of a Halloween party fire -- whereupon his colleagues notice that he doesn't react all that well to intense pressure. In other developments, Corday (Alex Kingston) and Romano (Paul McCrane) battle over a patient who may be facing an amputation; despite her recent erratic behavior, Weaver (Laura Innes) tries to save a baby who was all but killed in a home birth gone awry; and the romance between Chuny (Laura Ceron) and Kovac (Goran Visnjic) is sabotaged by his insatiable addiction to sex. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A stolen-goods fence is fatally shot in the groin by an elusive gunman. The investigation of this killing leads to the victim's girlfriend and one of his disgruntled customers -- and, inevitably, to another murder. Elsewhere, Connie (Charlotte Ross) suspects that her sister Michelle (Katherine La Nasa) is being abused by Michelle's no-good husband Frank Colohan (Nicholas Lea, in the first of three guest appearances). Lourdes Benedicto makes her first series appearance as new pediatrics intern Rena Trujillo. The episode's pre-eminent crisis occurs at the site of a commuter-train accident, where Carter (Noah Wyle) and Kovac (Goran Visnjic) are forced to extreme measures to save the life of trapped firefighter Larkin (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The doctors also try to rescue a woman (Stacy Haiduk) who, though impaled by a shard of medal, is more concerned about the health of her son. Likewise at the scene of the accident, Corday (Alex Kingston) begins to go into contractions; and even psychiatrist Legaspi (Elizabeth Mitchell) makes an appearance when the person who caused the crash is located. Finally, an ongoing story arc is wrapped up as the dying Bishop Stewart (John Cromwell) tries to assuage Kovac's (Goran Visnjic) guilt over "deserting" his family during the Balkan wars. Originally scheduled for September 27, 2001, this ER episode was moved back to October 4 due to network coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Weaver (Laura Innes) heads to Doc Magoo's on personal business and fails to answer her pager when Chen (Ming-Na) and Malucchi (Erik Palladino) need her. An off-duty Carter (Anthony Edwards) deals with victims of a rock-concert stampede, tries to rectify a fatal error made by Chen and Malucchi in Weaver's absence, and injures his back. Weaver fires Chen for her error. Benton (Eriq La Salle) learns that the mother of his son, Reese (Matthew Watkins), has been killed in an accident. Vondie Curtis-Hall, who guest starred as a transvestite in an earlier ER episode, here replaces Victor Williams in the recurring role of Roger, the man who claims to be the true biological father of Reese. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
