A suicidal cop and the criminal who was wrongfully accused of killing his partner are bound together by their mutual desire to catch the true culprit in this breathlessly-paced chase film starring Park Joong-Hoon and Chun Jeong-Myoung. Inspector Sung-woo and his partner were on a routine stakeout when Sung-woo walked away from his post and his partner was ruthlessly gunned down. Meanwhile, as Sung-woo prepares to accept the punishment handed down by his superiors, petty thief Su-hyun struggles to break free from the criminal syndicate. When Su-hyun receives a call to carry out one last job, he has little choice but to accept and hope for the best. But the job is closely tied to the murder of Sung-woo's partner, and when Su-hyun is caught he is set up as the scapegoat for the crime he vows to prove his innocence at any cost. In a bold move that stuns the entire police force, Su-hyun escapes from the hospital where is being held under tight security, kidnapping Sung-woo as a bargaining chip. But how does one threaten a cop that doesn't care if he lives or dies? As the chase to find the true killer gets underway these two unlikely allies quickly discover that, despite being on opposing sides of the law, they're both on the same mission. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

After the success of the modern-day comic martial arts epic Arahan, writer/director Ryu Seung-wan changed gears and again teamed up with his brother, actor Ryu Seung-beom, to produce Crying Fist, a much more serious boxing drama. Actor Ryu plays Yu Sang-hwan, a street thug who rejects the life of his hard-working, struggling father for a life of petty crime and run-ins with the law. He winds up in a juvenile detention center, where he responds to some bullying by flying at the bully, Roc (Kim Su-hyeon), and biting his ear off. Yu is then taken under the wing of the prison's boxing trainer, and he learns a bit of self-discipline through boxing, gradually recognizing his own strengths, and eventually acknowledging the support of his caring family. Meanwhile, 40-year-old Kang Tae-shik (Choi Min-sik of Oldboy), is a washed up former champion whose home and professional life have completely fallen apart. His wife leaves him, taking their young son. Besieged by creditors, Kang earns a meager living by charging people on the street for the privilege of punching him out. In danger of losing his son forever, his own health deteriorating rapidly, Kang decides to enter one last boxing competition, the same one which the equally desperate Yu has chosen to show his mettle. Crying Fist won a FIPRESCI Award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, and had its North American premiere at Subway Cinema's 2005 New York Asian Film Festival, with director Ryu in attendance. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook directed this violent and offbeat story of punishment and vengeance. Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is a husband and father whose reputation for womanizing is well known. One day, for reasons he doesn't understand, Oh Dae-su finds himself locked up in a prison cell, with no idea of what his crime was or whom his jailers may be. With a small television as his only link to the outside world and a daily ration of fried dumplings as his only sustenance, Oh Dae-su struggles to keep his mind and body intact, but when he learns through a news report that his wife has been killed, he begins a long and difficult project of digging an escape tunnel with a pair of chopsticks. Before he can finish -- and after 15 years behind bars -- Oh Dae-su is released, with as little explanation as when he was locked up, and he's soon given a wad of money and a cellular phone by a bum on the street. Emotionally stunted but physically strong after 15 years in jail, Oh Dae-su struggles to unravel the secret of who is responsible for locking him up, what happened to his wife and daughter, and how to best get revenge against his captors. Oldeuboi was screened in competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and won the coveted Grand Prix. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Sophomore university student Su-weon (Kim Ha-neul) has been struggling with financing her education since she began her degree program, which has forced her to become a part-time tutor. In need of a new student since she was forced to quit her previous assignment with a group of sexually aggressive young men, Su-weon, with her mother's assistance, finds a new job working with the son of a rich acquaintance. The young man, Ji-hun (Gweon Sang-woo), has spent the last three years studying in the United States and -- due to his ambivalence toward his studies -- he has failed to graduate as a senior in each of those three years. For his part, Ji-hun would rather not have anything to do with his new tutor and attempts to scare her away. Meanwhile, Su-weon is just as determined to accomplish her objectives with Ji-hun, and as the two wage psychological warfare with one another, an unexpected friendship and romance begins to bloom. My Tutor Friend was a smash hit in South Korea upon its release in early 2003, topping the box-office charts for five weeks after its debut. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

The director of one of South Korea's most successful films ever at the box office (2001's Friend), Kwak Kyung-taek returns to the screen with this remarkably personal drama addressing the issues of father-son relationships and parental expectations. A small town police chief in the remote Gyeongsang Province, Cha Cheol-min's father (Kim Kab-soo) has been pulling double duty in raising and supporting his son since the death of his wife long ago. Cha Cheol-Min (Jeong Woo-seong) himself emotes the air of an uninspired slacker, having earned the nickname "Mutt Boy" after befriending a pup from the police pound when he was a young boy. Though Cha Cheol-Min's father's last ditch attempt to reform his son by adopting young female offender Jeong-Ae is unarguably well intended, her presence seems to have little effect on the seemingly disaffected youngster. What Cha Cheol-Min's father doesn't realize, however, is that beneath his son's lazy façade lies a man equally dedicated to fighting crime in his own unique way. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
