After a blow on the head, Monk (Tony Shalhoub) awakens in the tiny backwater town of Purnell, Wyoming, with both his memory and all traces of his identification gone. As Monk tries to figure out what's happened, a local woman named Cora (Laurie Metcalf) appears, declaring that he is her husband--and with no proof to the contrary, Monk takes Cora at her word, returning to her house and acting the role of dutiful helpmate! Directed by Paul Abascal, Paparazzi chronicles the aftermath of four paparazzi photographers whose search for the all-important "perfect shot" ends in a tragic car accident. Movie star Bo Laramie (Cole Hauser) is understandably furious when, thanks to the notorious celebrity-chasers, his wife, Abby (Robin Tunney), is seriously injured, and his eight-year-old son is paralyzed. After the accident, Bo dedicates his life to putting a stop to a paparazzo's deadly overzealousness. The 15th precinct investigates the death of a young boy, who was murdered for his bicycle. Eventually a suspect is arrested, only to embarrass the cops by escaping out of the interview-room window. Meanwhile, Frank Colohan (Nicholas Lea), the abusive brother-in-law of detective Connie McDowell (Charlotte Ross), manages to post bail, whereupon his wife, Michelle (Katherine La Nasa), forgives him and takes him back -- an act of kindness that has tragic and surprising consequences. The premature birth of Michelle's baby launches a story arc that will come to fruition at the end of NYPD Blue's tenth season. Nicholas Gilbert (Kevin Vincent O'Connor) the deranged homeless man who witnessed the murder of a man named Jefe in the previous episode (and who was, surprisingly, the scion of a wealthy family), turns up dead after being prematurely released from lockup. Outraged, Danny (Rick Schroder) reams out the desk sergeant who let Nicholas go -- thereby leading to another black mark on Danny's record. Realizing that his partner is rapidly becoming his own worst enemy, Andy (Dennis Franz) extends a helping hand to Danny. Elsewhere, Diane (Kim Delaney) investigates a murder-suicide which may be linked with her elusive enemy Denby (Andy Cohen), who, despite the fact that no one can find him, continues to wreak havoc in the 15th precinct. On another front, Baldwin (Henry Simmons) has an unpleasant run-in with the owner of a diner -- and also wrestles with the notion of asking Valerie (Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon) out on a date. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In the fourth season opener, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan) have entered college in Sunnydale and set about choosing courses. Despite a roommate who snores, Willow is confident in the new intellectual environment, but Buffy feels unsure of herself and completely out of place. Soon, she meets Eddie (Pedro Balmaceda), another insecure freshman clutching his favorite book, Of Human Bondage. After they part ways, Eddie is attacked by a group of vampires led by Sunday (Katherine Towne), a punkish vampire on campus. Later, Buffy realizes that Eddie was not in class and goes to his dorm room only to find his things missing, except for the book. While on slayer patrol, a newly vamped Eddie lures Buffy into a confrontation with Sunday. In other plot developments, Xander (Nicholas Brendon) has not entered college, but gone on a trip across America, ending in Oxnard and a stint in a male strip club -- as a dishwasher. After a drunken driver kills three people in the same accident, Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) deliver the perpetrator to the D.A.'s office. Still grieving over the death of his former partner, Claire Kincaid, in a similar DUI accident, McCoy (Sam Waterston) intends to charge the driver with first-degree murder, a determination which results in conflict between McCoy and his current partner Ross (Carey Lowell). The ensuing trial degenerates into a media circus, helped not at all by the ruthless behavior of a politically ambitious judge. This made-for-TV melodrama is based on an actual event that had been so thoroughly documented by the news services of the day that one is amazed that any suspense could possibly be engendered. In Dade County, Florida, disgruntled taxpayer Harry Kee (Michael Paul Chan) angrily protests a huge IRS bill by wiring up a box of explosives and hijacking a school bus full of special-needs children. Although the kids are terrified, Marta Caldwell (Maria Conchita Alonso), the bus' Cuban-born driver, remains calm and collected throughout the ordeal, not only helping her charges survive the crisis, but also providing comfort and support to a teacher's aide on the verge of a diabetic seizure. But while Marta keeps her head about her, the kidnapper grows more and more unhinged, and the police surround the hijacked bus, ready to shoot to kill if necessary. Though slightly weighed down by a subplot involving the courageous driver's home life, Sudden Terror: The Hijacking of School Bus #17 manages to pack a wallop,even for those who are aware of the outcome.
