The contestants for this British game show (based on an Israeli TV original) were selected by telephone some three to four days before the weekly Saturday-night telecast. Arriving at the studio, these contestants were then chosen at random to play a Q&A game, wherein they were divided into "players" and "brokers." Those in the latter category were given the opportunity to guess the four-figure combination to a vault containing 100,000 pounds. The amount increased by another 100,000 pounds for every week that the vault remained unopened, while viewers were invited to call in to participate -- thus beginning the cycle all over again. Making its British TV bow in 2001, Oblivious was more than a little beholden to Candid Camera. On each episode, host Davina McCall took to the streets, collaring innocent bystanders and asking them general-knowledge questions. In other words, this was a game show in which the contestants didn't even known they were on a game show. Those who answered correctly were invited to appear on the "studio" portion of the program, in which during a "Memory Bank" segment they were obliged to correctly answer the questions they'd previously missed. In the closing round, "24 Hours," the winners went out on the streets themselves, trying to sucker other pedestrians into playing the game.
