Pablo Echarri Movies
Argentine screen idol Pablo Echarri debuted in the mid- to late '90s with several features produced in his native country, such as El Desvio (1997), Héroes y Demonios, and Alma Mía (1999). Echarri garnered worldwide attention from the early 2000s onward, first with the twisty psychological thriller You Should Not Be Here (2002) -- as an Internet surfer unwittingly enmeshed in a madman's deadly trap -- then with Marcelo Piñyero's The Method (2005), a psychodrama about the backstabbing and manipulation that transpire within the boardrooms of a corporation. The following year, Echarri lent a supporting role to director Israel Adrián Caetano's period thriller Crónica de una Fuga, the true story of four men who escaped from the jaws of death by breaking out of a penitentiary just prior to execution. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie GuideThe true story of four men who narrowly escaped death at the hands of Argentina's military death squads during the 1970's is brought to the screen in this thriller. In 1977, Claudio Tamburrini (Rodrigo De La Serna) was a goalie for a minor league football team when he was abducted by members of the Argentine military police and taken to an unofficial detention center on the false suspicion that he was a terrorist. Over 30,000 people lost their lives at the hands of Argentinean authorities under the military junta that ruled the country between 1976 and 1983, and as he was tortured by intelligence agents looking for information he didn't have, Tamburrini fully expected to become another victim. After many sessions of brutal torture, Tamburrini and his fellow captives Guillermo (Nazareno Casero) and Tano (Martin Urruty) were being readied for execution when in a final desperate act, Tamburrini dove out a window during a rainstorm. Guillermo, Tano and another man followed, and the four, naked and with noting but their wits, began a desperate run to freedom. A major box office success in Argentina, Croica De Una Fuga (aka Chronicle of an Escape and Buenos Aires 1977) received its North American premier at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The question as to how far a corporate drone would go to land a high-level position at a multinational corporation is explored in Argentinian director Marcelo Piñeyro's back-stabbing boardroom drama that takes its name from a mysterious human-resources strategy imported from the United States as a means of choosing the best man for the job. As the time for a decision draws near, the streets of Madrid are awash with anti-globalization protesters; and the tension between job applicants Carlos (Eduardo Noriega), Nieves (Najwa Nimri), Fernando (Eduard Fernández), Ana (Adriana Ozores), and Enrique (Ernesto Alterio) comes to a head. As the corporate lackeys engage in an increasingly dehumanizing series of psychological games and scorching betrayals, the choice of who will ultimately take the reins of the coveted position will ultimately depend on which applicant is willing to employ the most diabolical techniques of manipulation. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Spanish-born filmmaker Jacobo Rispa (Un Día Perfecto) helms his second feature with the savvy thriller You Should Not Be Here, which debuted in Spain in 2002 and received its first American issue from the Tanelorn Films label. The pair try logging onto an online discussion forum whose host, Sergio Tristan Ulloa, delights in having his users describe and discuss their reactions to death-defying situations. All of this seems harmless enough, but when the two meet Sergio in person and he begins imposing lethal situations on them, eventually under the threat of murder -- such as trapping them, unwittingly, in a narrow cave filled with water -- Gonzalo and Marta are forced to engage in a series of cunning mind games with their tormentor. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
