Plucky soldiers struggle to defy the odds in this action-packed drama of men at war. In 1937, Chen Xilian (Wang Yongming) commands a battalion of the Eighth Route Army as China battles Japan and communist and nationalist forces vie for China's political future. As Xilian and his men make their way through the hilly forests of Northern China, a female newspaper reporter (He Dandan) travels with them, covering the fighting for a nationalist paper and unwittingly throwing the soldiers off their stride. While on patrol, Xilian discovers that Japanese troops have set up a secret airfield in the hills, and despite the fact they're poorly equipped and greatly outnumbered, he and his men begin mapping out a plan to take on the enemy. A top celebrity cop finds his ability to solve a series of kidnappings and white collar crimes sidelined by the grief he harbors for his long-missing girlfriend in this dramatic Hong Kong action entry from director Benny Chan. Ever since Suen Sui-yan (Aaron Kwok)'s girlfriend went missing without a trace ten years ago, everything just seemed to fall apart for the high profile policeman who could once do no wrong. These days Suen is investigating a lucrative money laundering scheme, but upon being assigned the task of escorting a crooked accountant named Hung (Patrick Chow) to the Hong Kong airport, his luck takes an even darker turn when an assassin's bullet kills his unfortunate charge. Suen's suspicions that something is amiss are soon confirmed when a barrister acting on behalf of powerful businessman Yiu (Lo Ka-leung) denies that his client played any part in the killing and Yiu's assets are freed-up since the potential police witness has been permanently silenced, and before long the suspicious suit is struggling to pay off a sizable debt to the triads. Soon after triad boss Jim (Lau Siu-ming) admits to a fondness for Yiu's pop-star son Yiu Ha (Tommy Yuen), the adolescent singing sensation is suddenly kidnapped. First-time director -- and actor -- Huang Hong presents the tale of a goodly farmer who suddenly has his hands full with more than two dozen orphans in his household in the domestic comedy 25 Kids & One Dad. Zhao Guang (director Huang) has literally gone from rags to riches, having been an orphan raised by the townspeople of his small village to building one of the most successful chicken farms in the region. In a spontaneous moment of largesse while attending a local civil ceremony, Zhao donates a large sum of money to the regional welfare organization and proclaims his wish to adopt every orphan in the region. Soon, the farmer begins finding scores of children on his doorstep and begins the process of picking out the true orphans from the fake ones. As the final count comes down to 25, Zhao takes them in and begins to feed, clothe, and educate them -- which takes a toll on his savings and draws the ire of his fiancée, Guiqing (Li Lin). ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide
