Cinematographer-turned-documentary filmmaker Patrick Creadon takes a compelling look at the brainy world of crossword puzzles, the masterminds that conceive them, and the folks who struggle to solve them in a film that offers a close look at one of America's most popular pastimes. For 12 years, the name Will Shortz has been indelibly linked to the wildly popular New York Times crossword puzzle. As filmmakers speak with Shortz and the puzzle constructors with whom he collaborates, viewers are treated to a rare look into the minds of the people whose intellect entertains a nation of puzzle-solvers on a weekly basis. Interviews with a variety of celebrity crossword-puzzle enthusiasts including Bob Dole, Ken Burns, and Jon Stewart are also included, and a trip to the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament -- an annual event founded by Shortz himself -- offers an entertaining look at a world where the brain power and colorful personalities of contestants combine to create a lively atmosphere of friendly competition. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Following up on her 2000 opus Suspicious River, Lynne Stopkewich directs this documentary about the final Lilith Fair. Launched in 1997 by Sarah McLachlan and a host of other female singer/songwriters, the concert series quickly became one of the most popular, and profitable, tours of the late '90s. Stopkewich, along with her crew, tagged along during the 2000 tour, traveling to 42 shows across the continent. Rising early and crashing late -- often in the bus as it drives to the next destination, Stopkewich's crew quickly gets a taste of the rigors of life on the road. Along the way, they interview fans, crew, tech staff, and the stars. Apart from such documentary footage, Lilith also features performances from McLachlan, Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders, Sheryl Crow, the Dixie Chicks, and sundry other. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

In an era of loud music and crass lyrics, there are still certain voices that listeners can turn to for a more elegant sound. This program presents the Indigo Girls in a live concert at the Fillmore Theater in Denver. Recorded in 1999, the show contains many Indigo Girl hits, including the crowd pleasing "Galileo." New material is presented as well, in the inimitable style of the Indigo Girls, who charm their audience with clever lyrics and musical virtuosity. A thoughtful interview with the two women gives insight into the personal side of their lives. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide

The premise of MTV's popular Unplugged series is to strip away the layering of high-end quality production of a popular song, pare it down to its essential elements, and present an acoustical of that song performed by the artist. On this video some of MTV's finest memories are collected for this video album, including Eric Clapton's "Before You Accuse Me," "When the Night Comes" by Joe Cocker, Sheryl Crow's "Leaving Las Vegas," "Pride and Joy" and "Life Without You" performed by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan, "Midnight Rider" by the Allman Brothers Band, John Mellencamp's "Small Town," Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game," "Closer to Fine" by Indigo Girls, and Seal's performance of "Prayer for the Dying." ~ Forrest Spencer, All Movie Guide

This documentary by Buffy Childerhose chronicles the first all-female music tour in the annals of time. The Lilith festivals took place outdoors over the summer of 1997, playing to sold-out audiences comprised of both women and men. The enthusiastic response from a mixed gender audience should have set to rest the resistance of the male-dominated concert tour industry, which persists in the idea that the musical artistry of women is not marketable. The name Lilith was appropriate, which is the mythological, biblical, and astrological name of the woman who dared to believe in her own equality and defied the patriarchal god. Interviews with musician/Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan, as well as other artists, gives insight into the difficult and rewarding process of putting together this production Highlights of the Lilith Fair performances include musical offerings from the Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Meredith Brooks, Shawn Colvin, and Sarah McLachlan.
