The title of this British sitcom referred to the quicksilver marital state of George Hutchenson (Derek Nimmo) and Beth Jenkins (Nerys Hughes). Having once been husband and wife, George and Beth were divorced, whereupon they married other people. Then both hero and heroine were single again, and thus tried to pick up where they left off -- much to the dismay of various friends, relatives, and offspring. Third Time Lucky was carried by ITV's Yorkshire Television service for seven weeks, from August 6 to September 17, 1982. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Not to be confused with the 1969 BBC sitcom of the same name, Yorkshire Television's Thicker Than Water began life as a one-off pilot episode titled Where There's Brass. Joss Ackland starred as Joseph Lockwood, a widower with two unmarried sons. The humor arose from Joseph's tireless efforts to marry off his overaged youngsters and get them out of what was left of his hair. Thicker Than Water ran for six episodes, which aired in Great Britain from April 28 to June 9, 1981. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Mollie Sugden of Are You Being Served? fame starred on this British sitcom as Ida Willis, the newly hired housekeeper of Dr. Robert Price (Christopher Blake) and his wife Angie (Jennifer Lonsdale). Imagine Ida's surprise when she discovered that Robert was her own son, whom she'd given up for adoption 28 years earlier. Now imagine what developed during the remaining episodes of this long-running series. Ringing in with a total of 37 half-hour installments and a handful of seasonal specials, That's My Boy aired over ITV's Yorkshire Television service from October 23, 1981 to April 4, 1986. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
During the 1970s, British TV fans were treated to two different sitcoms bearing the title You're Only Young Twice, both of which used a retirement home as a comedy backdrop. The second, and more successful, of these two programs debuted on September 6, 1977. The series was set in Paradise Lodge, an old ladies home where the irrepressible Flora Petty (Peggy Mount) invariably led the other tenants into all sorts of mischief. The other principal characters were Flora's loyal "lieutenant" Cissy Lupin (Pat Coombs), humorless nursing home matron Miss Milton (Charmian May), and Miss Milton's equally dour assistant Miss Finch (Georgina Moon). Yielding 31 half-hour episodes and two hour-long specials, You're Only Young Twice ran until August 4, 1981. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

After a years' worth of somewhat awkward courtship, Harry and Vicky were wed. The 13 half-hour episodes of Second Time Around were aired by BBC1 over a five-month period, beginning October 23, 1974 and ending February 14, 1975. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Created by Alan Melville, the British sitcom The Whitehall Worrier was introduced as "The Mallard Imaginaire," the July 5, 1966 presentation of the BBC anthology Comedy Playhouse. Robert Coote starred as the Right Honourable Mervyn Pugh, an incredibly thickheaded MP. Pugh's stupidities were offset by the comparative brilliance of wife Janet (Moira Lister) and children David (Karl Lanchbury) and Michelle (Celia Hewitt). Lasting six episodes, The Whitehall Worrier was originally telecast from February 17 to July 13, 1967. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The title character in this British sitcom was Jacquie Villiers (Moira Lister) who, after the death of her husband in a freak accident, discovered that she had inherited nothing but debts. To keep a roof over the heads of herself and her family, she tackled a variety of truly odd jobs, and also took in a boarder named Freddie Phillipson (Donald Hewlett). Debuting in 1967, The Very Merry Widow lasted until 1969, by which time its title had been adjusted to The Very Merry Widow and How. Of the series' 19 taped episodes, only two are presently known to exist. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Roy Kinnear, the diminutive British comic actor who gained international fame in the films of Richard Lester, followed his first TV triumph That Was the Week That Was with this weekly, 25-minute sitcom. Kinnear starred as Stanley Blake, a gormless young man who regularly escaped his humdrum existence by retreating into the world of his vivid imagination. Anne Cunningham co-starred as Stanley's wife Helen, who played a variety of "alternate reality" roles in her husband's Mitty-esque dreams. Created by Dave Freeman, A World of His Own debuted in 1964, lasting two seasons and 13 episodes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
