Rick (Larry Manetti) sets sail on a chartered fishing excursion with several suspicious-looking customers. Hours later, Rick's boat drifts back to the dock with no one on board. The authorities are certain that Rick and his passengers have been lost at sea, but Magnum suspects otherwise. Assisting our hero in his subsequent investigation is Det. Gordon Katsumoto (Clyde Kusatsu), a John Wayne devotee who insists upon speaking and behaving just like "The Duke" (the fact that the detective's Wayne imitation is pretty awful only adds to the enjoyment of this episode!). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

While playing a video game called "Dungeon Master", Magnum manages to mess up the computerized security system at Robin's Nest. Enter security expert Krista Villaroch (Jenny Agutter), who is hired to get the system up and running in time for a jewelry exhibit being held at the estate. The capricious Magnum dares Krista to test out the system with a phony heist--little realizing (at first) that she is actually the daughter of infamous jewel thief Doc Villaroch (Cesar Romero), who despite his advanced age is far from retired! In the first half of Magnum, P.I.'s Season Three opener (originally telecast as a single two-hour episode). T.C.'s old war buddy Nuzo (James Whitmore Jr.) shows up in Hawaii with a dire warning for T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and his comrades-in-arms Magnum (Tom Selleck) and Rick (Larry Manetti). It seems that the evil Soviet torture specialist Col. Ivan (Bo Svenson), who made life hell for Magnum et. al. during their time in Viet Cong POW camp, is still at large--and determined to kill his former prisoners. Unfortunately, Magnum isn't around at first to hear Nuzo's warnings, which fact proves fatal for one of his closest associates. As Magnum, P.I. swings into its second season, Hawaii-based private investigator Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) is once again saddled with a contentious client. This time it's Texan Billy Joe Bob Little (James Whitmore Jr.), who hires Magnum to locate his sister Carol Ann (Marla Pennington)--who, to use the old Victorian literary phrase, has fallen among thieves. Unfortunately, the mercurial Billy Joe Bob tends to do his thinking with his fists, forcing Magnum into sustaining more physical abuse at the hands of his clients' victims than usual. The limit comes when Billy Joe Bob makes a final assault on the villains' lair by stealing the helicopter owned by Magnum's buddy T.C. (Roger E. Mosely! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Originally intended as the pilot for a never-sold cop series titled Battles, this made-for-TV meller stars William Conrad as William Battles, a retired Los Angeles police detective spending his golden years in Hawaii. Somewhat bored by inactivity, Battles takes a job at a local college as assistant football coach and security chief. Not unexpectedly, our corpulent hero is soon up to his neck in a murder investigation, this time with a recent homicide bearing a remarkable resemblance to a similar killing in the 1940s (as described in a mock newsreel narrated by no less than Lowell Thomas). Assisting Battles in bringing the culprit to heel are his niece Shelby (Robin Mattson), collegiate football star Deacon Joe Jackson (Lane Caudell) and his own boss, Dean Mary Phillips (Marj Dusay). When Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.) wins a free trip to Hawaii, Jim (James Garner) tags along, only to cross the path of his former Army commander John "Howling Mad" Smith (Ken Swofford). Before Jim quite knows what has happened, Smith has gotten him involved in a CIA operation designed to break up a spy ring. Unfortunately, old "Howling Mad" has neglected to inform Jim of all the dangers inherent in this assignment, and as a result our hero is beaten, robbed, drugged and kidnapped--and that's all during the first half hour. Fortunately, through the sort of incredible coincidence that could only happen on network television, Jim's policeman pal Dennis Becker (Joe Santos) shows up in Hawaii just in time to lend a helping hand.
