A solid, good-looking leading man with an upper-class British accent, he moved to England while in his teens and joined the army in 1917, serving in France. He debuted onstage in 1919, then onscreen in 1924; for the next decade he alternated between plays and films, usually as a leading man, then moved to Hollywood in 1934 and appeared in many American films. He was often cast as an upright, conscientious husband, lover, or friend. He returned to England for war service in 1942. This musical chronicles 15 years in the life of a New York City Street. In 1912, 52nd Street is a peaceful residential neighborhood and by 1937 it has become a bawdy red-light district. As the street changes, so do the lives of a brother and his two sisters who become estranged when he marries an actress at the beginning of the film. The two snooty sisters find their brothers' actions distasteful and consider the lowly actress unworthy of their high-born brother. Years later, Rathbone came back into her life, this time with the intention of seducing Ms. Francis' grown daughter (Jane Bryan). The Devil Is a Sissy deserves an historical footnote as the only film to team three of the biggest child stars of the 1930s: Mickey Rooney, Jackie Cooper and Freddie Bartholomew. Bartholomew is a wealthy young English boy attending a New York "magnet" school, whose students are drawn from all walks of life. He is befriended by slum kid Rooney, son of a recently executed gangster, who in his own roughneck fashion helps Bartholomew to "assimilate" (Translation: He helps him to steal and evade the cops). Cooper is a middle-class gang leader with whom Rooney frequently clashes. Freddie attempts to fit in with his new chums by masterminding a break-in at a Park Avenue townhouse. Briefly breaking away from her high-gloss modern soap operas, Kay Francis stars as Florence Nightingale in this reverent Warner Bros. biopic. The screenplay concentrates on Nightingale's humanitarian activities during the Crimean War of 1854-55. Defiant in the face of military bureaucracy and the male hierarchy, she organizes a volunteer group of nurses to tend to the military wounded, and also works tirelessly to update and improve the primitive, almost barbaric medical conditions of the Victorian Era. Of the supporting characters, only Ian Hunter as Fuller evinces any sort of humanity; the rest, especially Montague Love, are grim-visaged stereotypes. Critics were unkind to Kay Francis' performance in White Angel, with the New York Times speaking for many by suggesting that Francis was too overwhelmed by the historical importance of her character to deliver a believable performance. In this adaptation of author de la Roche's chronicle of the passionate lives of the strange Whiteoaks of Jalna, their beautiful family estate located in souther Ontario. The story begins as a young Whiteoak, a novelist travels to New York where he encounters a charming woman, marries her, and takes her back to Jalna. There she encounters many difficulties as she attempts to adjust to life with his odd family. It does not help that several soap-operatic events transpired while he was gone when his brother married the illegitimate daughter of a despised neighbor. One day a "sexy dame" suddenly shows up on the family porch. Soon she and the novelist are trysting away, but before he can consummate their affair he is killed during a terrible fall. Kay Francis stars as Stella Parish, a London stage favorite who suddenly disappears without a trace. British news correspondent Keith Lockridge (Ian Hunter) girdles the globe in search of Stella, who has left her beloved daughter Gloria (Sybil Jason) in the care of an aunt (Jessie Ralph). Finally locating his quarry, Lockridge learns that Stella dropped from view to hide the fact that she once served a jail sentence as an accessory to murder. He promises to kill the story for Gloria's sake, but his dispatch is inadvertently published away, forcing Stella into a tawdry career as a "freak" stage attraction (not unlike Evelyn Nesbit Shaw). Max Reinhardt's legendary Hollywood Bowl production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was transferred to the screen by Warner Bros. in 1935. Like most of Shakespeare's comedies, the story contains several seemingly unrelated plotlines, all tied together by a single unifying event, in this instance the impending wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. One story thread concerns the mistaken-identity romances of four young Athenians; another involves a group of "rude mechanicals" who plan to stage a production of "Pyramus and Thisbe" in honor of the wedding; and third plot strand is motivated by the mischievous misbehavior of invisible fairies Oberon, Titania, and Puck. While one of the members of Reinhardt's original stage cast, Olivia De Havilland (Hermia) was retained for the film version, the remainder of the roles went to Warners' ever-reliable stock company. Some of the casting is inspired: James Cagney is brilliant as vainglorious amateur thespian Bottom, while Joe E. Brown is ideal as the reluctant female impersonator Flute. As the four lovers, De Havilland and Jean Muir far outshine the smirking and simpering Dick Powell and Ross Alexander. In the dominion of the fairies, Mickey Rooney is a bit too precious as Puck, but Anita Louise is a lovely Titania and Victor Jory a suitably menacing Oberon (his opening line "Ill met by moonlight, proud Titania!" still sends shivers down our spines). Cagney and Brown's fellow "mechanicals" are an odd mixture of the sublime (Frank McHugh) and the just plain silly (Hugh Herbert). While the performances and direction (by Reinhardt and William Dieterle) are uneven, the art direction and special effects (especially the nocturnal dance of the fairies) are breathtakingly beautiful. Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream" incidental music is masterfully orchestrated by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, while the cinematography by Hal Mohr earned the first write-in Academy Award in Hollywood history (Mohr had not been nominated due to hostilities arising from a recent industry strike). Considered a brave failure at the time of its first release, on a purely visual level A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of the more satisfying Shakespearean cinemadaptations of Hollywood's golden age. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The title might not mean much now, but in 1935 Jalna was familiar to readers everywhere as the best-selling first novel by Mazo de La Roche. Set in Canada, the story concerns the many members of the Whiteoak family, with special emphasis on Eden Whiteoak (David Manners). Eden is a writer, who marries his Manhattan publisher (Kay Johnson) and takes her back to meet his family. Alas, Eden has also brought back a few big-city vices, and before long he is attempting to seduce Pheasant (Molly Lamont), the illegitimate daughter of the Whiteoaks' next door neighbor (Nigel Bruce) and the wife of Eden's half brother Piers (Theodore Newton). True to form in soap operas such as these, Eden dies, leaving his widow to find comfort in the arms of another Whiteoak, Renny (Ian Hunter). Since all of this takes place in a crowded 75 minutes, it's no wonder that the film version of Jalna didn't completely satisfy fans of the novel. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Adapted from a play by Ernest Denny, this was one of director Michael Powell's "quota quickies" that lived up to the name, being filmed in a scant thirteen nights. (The stars were appearing in West End plays and couldn't film during the day, a not-uncommon practice at the time.) The lazybones of the title is Sir Reginald Ford, a baronet who has made indolence into an art form and sees no reason to change his ways -- until discovering that his means of support has dried up. With no recourse but to make an appropriate marriage, Ford pursues Kitty McCarthy, an American heiress, with considerable success. Just as things seem to be going along smoothly, Ford discovers that Kitty has lost her fortune. In the midst of all this, Ford discovers he has fallen in love with Kitty, not her money; further complications ensue as Kitty's conniving cousin Mike comes on the scene and tries to involve her in a wicked scheme. Based upon the play Murder Party by Roland Pertwee and John Hastings Turner, Night of the Party uses one of the murder mystery genre's favorite conventions, that of a parlor game gone wrong. In this instance, the game is being held after a dinner party thrown by the ruthless publishing tycoon, Lord Studholme, in honor of the visiting Princess Amelia of Corsova. The guests at the dinner party are a wide range of business and personal associates, each of whom has a strong grudge against the host. When the lights are turned out for a game of Murder in the Dark, Lord Studholme is discovered dead. Arriving shortly thereafter, Scotland Yard's Sir John Holland begins an investigation, and Studholme's secretary, Guy Kennington, is arrested under suspicion of murder. Studholme, however, is not convinced of Kennington's guilt, believing that any of the guests -- including his own daughter, who was present at the party -- could have slain the host. While this is all well and good, it isn't helping advance matters with his girl friend, Cynthia, who wants him to make more of an effort so they can get married. Capitalizing upon Peter's opportunistic streak, Cynthia persuades him to pitch one of his business ideas -- that petrol (or gas) stations will do better business if they are made more appealing to the customer - to Mr. Hatch, the wealthy owner of a car factory. The owner dismisses his idea, whereupon Peter pitches the same idea to a rival car factory. The rival hires Peter and he becomes a great success there. Employing deception, betrayal, disguises -- and a key withholding of information -- Peter's methods are not always honorable, but they are effective. Set in a BBC radio studio, the story gets under way when a much-despised airwaves personality is murdered in the middle of a live broadcast. Scotland Yard inspector Gregory (Ian Hunter) shows up to piece together the clues and sift through the suspects. The solution of the mystery hinges on the fact that the victim insisted upon broadcasting in a private room, far removed from his fellow actors. Inspector Gregory provides this solution by coming up with a transcription of the fatal broadcast (this at a time when few radio programs were recorded for posterity).
